Azden SMX-10

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have lurked here before. I have a Canon T2i, which is a great camera. I am more of a photographer, but have interest in video. The video quality of the T2i is great. It is like movie quality.

I also just got the Azden SMX-10. The microphone has better sound quality then the built-in microphone. Not bad for the amount you pay.

I put it on the hot shoe mount and I still pick up the autofocus sound, but it is not as loud as the one from the onboard microphone. Is there any way to remedy it? I have turned off the autofocus and there is no noise and frankly, I prefer manual focus over autofocus. However, sometimes I do have to use it especially if I cannot see the screen.

The only way to truly isolate the microphone from camera noise is to get the microphone off the camera, onto a boom pole, and close to the action. Of course, that requires having a dedicated boom op running with you.

That said, depending on the lens, the autofocus on the T2i can be incredibly loud. It's always going to make some noise, and will never be sound-friendly.

This is how i would go about solving the problem if a boom pole and boom operator are not an option

Here the mic is made rather directional and pushed out away from the lens a bit further. If you still have to use an ENG style rig where the mic is pointing the same direction as the lens then try to add as much space between the two as possible (obviously within reason)

I have found that my Tamron lenses auto-focus a bit more quietly than the canons but it is incredibly slow and far less accurate in video mode.
