Avoiding a confrontation with fs100 dop

Dermot

I wholeheartedly agree under normal circumstances. J.Davis obviously has a lot of good will to lose with his client if things go to rats.

My concern is that the profile that is being suggested does not have an optimally set knee or slope of 80, +1. It might be OK if you don't go over 100 ire but if the DP is exposing to 109 like Dermot and I do then the image will be clipped nastily around 105, you'll just bake in a horrid clip that cannot be graded out. I'm not trying to dis Frank's profile because it obviously works for him but if the Camera Operator is expecting a profile that works for a full range then everyone is going to lose.

I shot this in the summer. The forum re-compression has destroyed the fidelity of the highlights and are much better than presented here. I can assure you the highlights are well detailed and graduated up to 109 and grades beautifully and clips without banding. J.Davis if you want the settings give me a shout via PM.

p.s. these people really are that pale, we had very little sun for much of the summer.

Seriously, best of luck on this!

Good luck with the difficult situation.

thx to the both of you and the many posts earlier in the thread offereing support. I love this forum and the help and information you all readily provide

And of course, the one thing not mentioned here is that the shooter may actually manage to get it right.

very true and thank you for bringing this up, Im trying to keep an open mind and separate the two issues at hand. One issue is the loss of my monitor. The other issue is the switch of camera/shooter. The first issue is the most important as the second should resolve itself if I have proper monitoring … which I will pay for myself if need be (the brand that is my name will benefit).

At least we've gone from DoP to shooter. Nothing like a bit of nepotism eh?
lol - I had not noticed that I made that mental change until you mentioned it !

... sexy assistant in a latex outfit to distract

funny u should mention this but on a totally separate shoot we are hunting for sexy latex outfits !!! (female of course)

Re: Profiles

@ Nirv, Dermot and Postmaster/Frank
- Personally I am very very cautious of curves as sometimes they extend dr or fix something at the expense of skin tones, but I try to keep an open mind, I always test first (on all types of skin) before applying and I have never used Franks log curve so I don't want to dismiss it. In this shoot there will be no time for testing so I will run with the factory setting of 1/none as Frank suggested in an email. Thanks to all three of you for replying as I really appreciate your input.

Couldn't have said it any better my self. I agree fully.

There is NOTHING wrong with the FS100's highlight roll off. Unfortunately the public consciousness has been indelibly corrupted by some poor presets, some users not understanding how to deal with superbrights, crappy software that clips values over 100 ire or inability to read a histogram or a combination of all of the above.

Any DOP who is worth the title will be able to set up the FS100 to shoot high key without ugly highlight clipping.

I like to learn more about all of this gamma cruves, ire, clipping, profile settings etc, stuff... where do I go? (don't say film school lol)
