Avid Media Composer 2.8.3

Well, there isn't really an Avid rumors thread so this might be a bit premature.

From BLKDOG (a mod @ Avid):
"2.8.3 is supposed to go live tomorrow. Stay tuned." {Referenced in a totally random DVD string}

So - tomorrow is now today. Seems odd to jump from 2.8.0 to 2.8.3 but whatever. I don't know what all is being addressed in this alleged update but I hope it's Sony EX1 35Mbps file handling. Don't kill the alleged messenger.... might be wishful thinking on my part.

Interesting that they would jump to support Sony after NAB while JVC support has been off the charts for how long?

Others have reported that 2.8.3 has been GOLD for a while and some folks in Sweden already have the update.

Official Leopard support won't come untill 3.0 comes out in June. Vista support will come out then as well.

Oh, well..... You'd think I'd know better by now. No sign of 2.8.3 mentioned anywhere. Maybe dev teams are on the 3.0 release and a stopgap update's taken a back seat. Imagine that.

rollin the dice downloadin these bug fixes they call updates got old for me a looong time ago. I dont even know what versionm I'm on anymore.
lol

It's their having their paying clientele beta test for them that ran em into the ground. I hope their last ceo had stock in fcp.

updating avid is so not worth it most of the time. you have to uninstall it just to install it. -_-

plus ever since i upgraded to 2.8 i've hit more bugs then i ever have with anything under 2.7. i love avid, but they aren't very keen for making things easy for people.

and does anybody really believe that official support of avid for leopard will really be that worthwhile? nless i get a macpro where u can't even install tiger anymore, i'm sticking w/ tiger version.

(badjuju how did you install it in leopard? my friend has been trying to figure out how for awhile now..._) u

I cant see anyone believing a press release from avid at this point. They have cried wolf too many times. When they speak, I now suspect it as a goal in three years more than fact.
They have been sloding for many years and this last year instead of improving product, they simply thre up their hands and admitted what it was worth. This attempt to go toe to toe with consumer apps under the clout of the name of Avid only killed that clout and let us all know where their "new thinking" is gewared toward... and that is not remaining the industry standard in NLEs.

I can honestly say I'll miss em. They were freakin bad back in the day.

I can appreciate all your angst. Been there, done that.

My enthusiasm revolves around only one need: 35Mbps support for Sony's PMW-EX1.

We'll do it in Final Cut as it's quick turnaround and time-sensitive. That blows. Much like Final Cut blows.

Gripe all you want about Avid.... like I've said elsewhere, "Final Cut ain't all that". As if you're going to walk into some stress-free workflow free of frustrating updates and buggy releases. It's a magical, happy place where everything works and the system never crashes and you don't get hosed by Apple. Wake up.

I think the Avid users here should set up a FCS fund for Grinner. If enough users chip in a few bucks we can buy him FCP. Then we can check in on his FCP rants in the FCP forum. "Oh man, all this rendering is killing me!".

The grass is greener - from a distance.
Go on over, roll around in the green grass and then come back and tell us how awesome and silky smooth FCP is.
They have cried wolf too many times.
You've cried wolf too many times. Day in Day out you carry on like a broken record about how great FCP is, but I don't think you've spent any time editing with FCP. How can you evangelize an application that you've never actually used?

lol yeah its like "Is your Avid system running steady? Ruin it with this new update."

It's like that with any program. If it's stable and a new release doesn't include something you need, don't update.

It could be worse guys. Apple makes FCP and Quicktime, and half the Quicktime releases break something in FCP. Word on the forums is that the latest Pro Update (6.0.3) broke LiveType on 8-core intel Macs. Really? That slipped through their Beta program? An entire program they own is broken by their own update? You can ***** about Avid all you want, but the other companies really aren't any better.

Use the app that works best for you, and you don't update unless you need to. Even then, if you can--wait a week or two for others to shake out potential problems.

Michael.

the grass was greener when I had an Avid. ...when Avid MADE "Avids."
I much rather have a meridien-based symphony with firewire capability than any FCP system. Avid didn't make this tho. They walked out on those of us invested and began selling software-based solutions in a feeble attempt to compete with someone in a far different league. As a result, our options are now buggy software solutions in trial and error stages from Avid or a software solution with a bright future because it has only grown since its conception.
Not to mention the slap in the face from avid makes it very hard to give them any more of my money. I don't reward deception. I can't buy another Avid product.

Don't get the wrong idea. I am not the biggest FCP fan in the world. I have been on it since it's v1 release and today there are still many things that need to be evolved. I have used every NLE on the market. My old Avid is still my favorite. While I am frazzled because they killed it instead of upgrading it, this did not make me a bigger FCP fan... it just levelled the playing field. Avid did that, not me.

I still use my adrenaline for my daily billing. I do not hear "wow, you have an Avid!?" anymore. I talk clients like Anheuser Busch into paying my hourly rate in spite of the fact that we are nursing a buggy box. I dropped my rate down to 150 bucks an hour in order to do that. Yes, I am having to take steps backwards because the company I was so vested in stepped so far backwards.
Does this make my adrenaline system better than my FCP system? well, a little bit but we are talking about a 45k suite I was lied to about vs a 7k suite I was pleasantly surprised with. I should have speant another 7 beefing up the fcp suite.

Business is business. Avid does not owe me anything (well, other than what they promised when selling adrenaline but I gave up on that 2 weeks after writing the check). Sole proprietors are prepared to take the good with the bad. Just part of the gig. I'd be a gluttin for punishment if I ever wrote avid another check tho. Thats like yelling how bad a burn hurts while sticking your hand back in the fire.

Nobody was a bigger Avid fan than me when Avid made Avids. I looked the other way as they misled for a long time but I had nothing bad to say about em until they started actually lieing. They should go ahead and fold or merge. The state they are in right now is not good for them or consumers.

Letting go.............

Google it. There are worse things in life than your Avid 'issues'. We've heard it all before and it really adds nothing of any benefit to this board. You whine like e kicked puppy.
