AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

This is a quick wierdo edit of a fun night last weekend.

96% of the shot made using the el cheapo 12.5mm f 1.4 fujinon lens of doom.
Shot in 1080p24 with the C setting.

Avchd -> ProRes422(HQ) -> XDCam 720p24VBR -> Vimeo

I see the diffrence. Thanks Tester.
Who doesn't? ;-)

Someone else has asked you, I'll repeat it...
And about vignetting (with that 96% stuff shot on "the el cheapo 12.5mm f 1.4 fujinon lens of doom")? Cropped @ 720p?

Just updated the spreadsheet (from 2nd post in this thread) with a bunch of settings.

Ignore line 12, I goofed up my cut/paste. Can someone delete it?

I saw the question raised here earlier, but I didn't find an answer- the Native 24p shows up with a field dominance in FCP (Upper, or Odd), while traditionally 24p footage has not. Is this a problem, or will it present one if trying to intercut with 24p footage from another source? Thanks for the info, and again for all the great work with this new firmware!

Don't know. That's the point of us testing the firmware. This is not a "tester13 gives us perfect firmware" project. We all have to take initiative and test this together. Our feedback helps Tester13 figure out what is what in the assembly code. If you think you see a problem, report it in the proper thread and/or see if you can help figure out what is going on.

Just did the "C" patch on my Gh1- Wow, This is a whole new camera- possibly beyond Ex1 quality. Cant wait to do more shooting with it!

Yeah I get a lot of play if I edit in 720p

In FCP a 1080P clip fitted into a 720p timeline give you a aspect of 67, the vig goes away at 77.

Has anyone tried reducing the 1080p24 GOP size from 15 to 12 when applying the native 24p patch? That might fix the strange frame rates that some are reporting (eg., 23.971).

I can confirm mtbcad finding with this settings:
Video bitrate adjustment 38000000
Overall bitrate adjustment 40000000
Limiting bitrate adjustment 42000000

Problem is when zooming with kit lens... Camera stops recording in 720 mode

I also tried Gop size 12 for 1080 and it doesn't seem to solve 23.971 problem...

I tried everything I could think of to solve this 23.971 problem. I've finally thrown in the towel for now and went back to 60i and using JES Deinterlacer on the footage. It still looks great at the "C" settings. I log and transfer into FCP as ProRes 422 (HQ) then deinterlace with JES and the footage is good to go.

My only issue still is the colors, seem a bit over saturated and a tad dark, especially when compared to the footage coming from the MJPEG patch. But with the MJPEG material you have to deal with the 30P issue.

What I've been trying is shooting a scene both ways (MJPEG and AVCHD) and then matching the AVCHD material to the MJPEG material in post. Time consuming, but the results are good. And I can't believe how well the high bitrate AVCHD holds up to color grading in post, very impressive compared to the stock AVCHD.

Best,
-Tim

Hunter,

Wait till you throw some cine lenses on that little beast. Been having an absolute ball with my Speed Panchros on this little camera with the patches. Image quality is outstanding.

Hmmm not good news. I'm still hoping it can be solved as the patch matures

Just a short test shot from yesterday using my Kowa 16-D anamorphic and 50mm Nikon lens. AVCHD using the settings from Gunther M's GH1 comparison post (I've since switched to the "C" settings on AVCHD as I had many write speed errors using Gunther's settings on a Sandisk Extreme 8GB). Graded in After Effects using curves.

To TEster13:

Is it possible to have two different settings for FHD and SH?

Because as I understand we have SH: 17Mbps, H: 13Mbps, L: 9Mbps all 720 60p

It seems that settings for AVCHD in Ptool do not affecting H and L.
THx

Anyone have problems with native 24P patch in FCP?

Anyone have problems with native 24P patch in FCP?

Has anyone else had the problem described below? I haven't been able to find much about this and it seems like a fairly serious issue. Thanks.

One thing I'm noticing with the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage that I've been shooting; when I Log and Transfer it into FCP and try to drop it onto a 23.98 timeline, I get the following error message:

Attention - This clip does not match this sequences settings or any of your sequence presets.

For best performance your sequence and External video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing.

Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?

When I take the original firmware footage, Log and Transfer it into FCP, de-interlace it with JES De-interlacer, and then drop it onto a 23.98 timeline, I don't get the error message.

What seems to be different about the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage is the Field Dominance. With the footage shot with the 60i wrapper and de-interlaced with JES, there is None under Field Dominance, with the High Bitrate AVCHD 1080p (24 fps) footage, there is Upper (Odd) under Field Dominance.

Anyone have any ideas on this and whether it might cause some issues down the line in editing or distribution?

Best,
-Tim[/quote]

I'm not having any issues with Adobe Premiere, just drag and drop, if it gave me something weird i'd probably just right click and tell it to interpret it as straight 23.98.

woodcarver, I'm not having any of those issues with FCP but I'm using Cineform Neoscene to transcode to ProRes LT. Shooting AVCHD with the 24p patch, "C" settings. Shows up as 23.98 in the bin, no field dominance. Runs fine on the timeline.
