AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

svart im glad you posted that u had this issue with the patriot lx class 10 , my class4 toshiba does the same thing, i was just about to pick pne of these patriot class 10..so which card with the D setting and 84000000 work with?

I'm about to go to Best Buy and get EXTREME Class 10 cards. Right now my crap Transcend Class 6 works with 40M Buffer, going to try the 84M Buffer when I get this card.

Did some tests today, using Pappas MJPEG settings and jobless "easy" settings with a Buffalo Class 6 card. Amazing! Everything is so much sharper. I tried to do some before and after tests, including 200% crops etc...:

It was pretty difficult to get this side by side comparison. Download the file link to get best results when viewing.

I think even resolution has increased, as those "islands of unsharpness" have gone which were there before, even on static shots

Great thanks to tester13!!!

VIDEO BUFFER..................................84000000
VIDEO BITRATE ADJUSTMENT)............50000000
OVERALL BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........56000000
LIMITING BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........60000000

Patriot LX class 10: No errors

AData class 6: Immediate card speed error

that means changing the video bitrate by 10k was the difference between working and not working on the Patriot LX class 10 card.

It also means that there is an interaction between the settings that we might not know about since going 10k higher caused the class 6 card to record but all cards to record strangely.

Headed to best buy myself. That lake scene is amazing. Barry, any chance of a resolution chart being shot soon, just for kicks? I can't believe how much the codec seems to affect the resolved detail, would be fun to know exactly how much!

I already shot the charts, but as far as resolved detail without aliasing, it's not improved. The sensor still works the way the sensor works, so the aliasing is still there. Perceived detail is much, much higher though, because the codec isn't mushing it all together.

try

VIDEO BITRATE ADJUSTMENT)............60000000
OVERALL BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........56000000
LIMITING BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........60000000

also, it's been tested, VIDEO BUFFER isnt needed anymore. Just use the other 3 listed here.

I wanted to try something, making the AVCHD settings 3x their initial settings:

VIDEO BUFFER..................................63000000(used 84000000)
VIDEO BITRATE ADJUSTMENT)............48000000
OVERALL BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........54000000
LIMITING BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........60000000

Patriot LX class 10: Works, recorded 2 files of 2 and 3 minutes while panning across grass and trees. No codec breakup.

AData class 6: Works, recorded 2 files of 1.5 and .75 minutes while panning across grass and trees. No codec breakup.

try

OVERALL BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........56000000
LIMITING BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........60000000

OK I'll try it.

Is there an explanation of the "video bitrate simplified"? buried somewhere in these threads I remember seeing something but now I can't find it. Ptool's hints still seem to mention needing more than one box checked when using it?

Immediate camera lockup when pressing record.

the it's too much for a class 6 or that specific class 6 card. or try with video buffer...i guess it comes down to variations that work best for the card you're using. nobody has had the same results cause everyone is using different cards. but from jobelss's previous tests, he's had successful results sans VIDEO BUFFER

I always try both class 10 and class 6 cards, sorry I should have mentioned it.

When pressing record, the "FHD" at the top of the screen completely disappears and all camera functions cease. Have to pull battery. Happens with both cards.

Class 10: records. playback shows macroblocking

Class 6: Records. Playback shows macroblocking

Car3o, what I'm saying is that I *have* to have buffer enabled or it won't record at all.

All of my testing today with:

VIDEO BITRATE ADJUSTMENT)............60000000
OVERALL BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........56000000
LIMITING BITRATE ADJUSTMENT.........60000000

Has shown errors either by not recording or having artifacts.

I *think* there is a relationship between the settings we do not understand completely.

I think "video bitrate" is for just the video stream. "overall" bitrate is both the video stream and audio stream and "limiting" bitrate is the maximum amount that the compression will allow.

What I see in the standard settings (according to Ptool) is:

buffer: 20,971,520
video bitrate: 16,000,000
overall bitrate: 18,000,000
limiting bitrate: 20,000,000

Where "video" is less than "overall" which is less than "limiting". Get what I'm saying? I think the current settings people are trying are not leaving room for compression and overhead.

40 minute time limit?

40 minute time limit?

I am experimenting with the "C" 44Mbps 1080 24p native settings. They are working well with a Transcend 32 GB class 6 card. No problems with panning and no mud in my test clips.

The only problem I run into are long takes 40 min plus. The camera seems to cut off around the 40 min mark and stops recording. I can start recording again right away but it will stop again around the 40 min mark.

There are two files recorded for the 40 min take. I noticed that the file sizes are 4,096 MB for each file for each 40 min take. I know that AVCHD will segment the take at 4GB for as many files as needed to finish the recording.

Has anyone else tested long recording times while using these firmware patches?
