Can my

Imac 2008
3.06ghz Core 2 Duo
4gb Ram
500gb HD
256mb graphics

edit T2i footage smoothly?
In FCP?

It can edit HDV 1080i very smoothly, with renders at 2min max!
Can it do this for avchd?

If not, will it edit smoothly with renders less then ten minutes?
I know someone who edits Red One footage with their 2.8ghz macbook pro so I am assuming this is no problem.

Yes and no.

Yes, your computer can handle it.

No, it will not edit T2i footage smoothly because T2i footage is not recorded in an editing codec. While some NLEs do offer "native" h.264 editing, FCP does not. You need to transcode your footage to an editing codec, like ProRes.

So also important: which OS and which version of FCS?

If I inport at Prores, will it then edit smoothly? I am editing in FCP6. I also have FCE4, as well as IMovie '09.
I have Snow Leapord.

You have higher specs than my current machine and I have no problem editing 1080p ProRes in FCP7. You should be A-OK.

The process isn't really "importing at ProRes." You need to use Compressor (which you received with Final Cut Studio) to transcode your footage. Since you are running Snow Leopard, you may also have luck with the EOS E1 plug-in from Canon, which is designed to transcode upon Log & Transfer within FCP.

Forget iMovie if you have any flavor of Final Cut at all. And forget FCE for at least two reasons: 1) it does not support ProRes, only AIC, and; 2) it cannot work with any frame rates other than 30p and 60i (or 25p/50i in PAL territory).

Interesting- FCP really can't edit it natively? Never had an issue in Sony Vegas. I am under the impression Premiere does a good job editing it natively as well. Is FCP/imovie the only example that can't?
