AVCHD better or worse when transcoded?

Cineform can have gamma shift issues and there are workarounds you can google.

I've been doing keying tests with AVCHD - ProRes and it's pretty good for such a cheap camera. Seeing a little noise & blockiness around fine wisps of hair, but a light touch of NR and it looks pretty snappy.

I think I read up on this in one of Christensen's excellent AE books. And to be clearer (a) the gamma issues I've read about weren't so much the codec as properly using it and (b) I've only messed with cineform out of curiosity - other would know more.

Too bad to hear that the DVCPROHD will make it look worse, because that was actually our first choice..

Unless something has changed with the Panasonic transcoder -- it absolutely DOES NOT make footage "look worse."

There is a change in dimensions. And, from memory of two years ago, I think -- think -- there's an issue where the AVCHD 1024p is transcoded to a DVCPROHD 24p that is laid on a 60i stream. I remember some issue with interlaced in CS4 and that removing the pulldown fixed it.

But, in terms of appearance to viewers -- the transcoded footage is so indistinguishable from an HPX170 it's ridiculous. I could sit here and roll off stories from two years ago -- but I won't.

Of course, you'll want a RAID array of some kind for DVCPROHD editing. Otherwise, you'll replace your current processor problem with an inadequate data stream (hard drive) problem.
