AVC-Intra: Does it help editing, and what's the best GH2 AVC-Intra hack?

I would like to know if hacking my GH2 with an I-frame only hack would improve performance when editing in Premiere Pro, and if so what patch would everyone recommend for such a hack?

I think that seems unlikely, Intra footage is typically even heavier. Are you running CS5 or CS6? I switched to CS6 recently and enabled the Nvidia Geforce hack, and the performance difference was staggering, even on my laptop.

Intraframe footage is easier to edit than long-GoP footage. It's a lot less computationally intensive. However, depending on how your computer uses your graphics card, it may be a non-issue, if your graphics card accelerates the long-GoP footage fast enough then you may not notice a difference.

Also, a GH2 with an I-frame hack is not AVC-Intra. AVC-Intra is a name for a specific 100mbps 4:2:2 10-bit implementation of intraframe AVC, as used on Panasonic's top-end cameras. No GH2 hack is going to come close to that, because it will still be 4:2:0 and 8-bit.

Ah, my mistake on the naming. So an I-frame-only patch would help performance? Awesome. Any recommendations for a patch? And I'm on CS6.

And I'm on CS6.

Do you have an Nvidia video card? There's a trick to enable your nvidia GPU for editing, it makes a HUGE difference. You have to manually type your card into the "cuda supported cards" text file in the Premiere directory. I went from have to render just about everything to being able to throw multiple effects and color correction on clips and they still play fine without having to render.

Yeah I have an NVIDIA card that isn't recognized by Premiere currently, what text file is this?

Never mind I found it, and this is like magic. You have no idea how much I appreciate this. Does it also speed up AME? I encode everything through that.

Cool, yeah it's incredible the difference it makes. Did it work? There are a couple tutorials on youtube/vimeo on how to do it as well.

I'm not sure if it speeds up Adobe Media Encoder or not, I always just export out of Premeire.

It worked perfectly, thanks! Any I-frame only hacks?

Cluster X is the name of the newest series of hacks by driftwood. Moon is the name of the newest GOP1 aka Intra aka All I-frame version of that series. You can download the latest version here: https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5806/cluster-x-moonЅrіzznebuladrewnetslipstream-spans

There is also a hack from driftwood called Slipstream, you can get it at the same location, the hacks take up the top 5 or 6 posts. The Slipstream hacks are like combinations of features from the Cluster X hacks.

Slipstream #3, or Moon (trial 5) are probably the 2 hacks you would want to look at if you want Intra.

You also need ptool to work with the hacks.

Ok, thank you. Do you know if the Driftwood hacks yield as high of a picture quality as lpowell's Flow Motion patch?

I would say they do, if not better. Depends on taste really. Luckily, you can test a bunch of them out.

Check out the samples on Youtube and Vimeo, just search for driftwood gh2 hack, tons of samples for every hack he has put out.
