Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

I like some of the stuff in the extended Aliens, but not all of it. I preferred not seeing LV-426 until Ripley and the marines do. It was more mysterious and suspenseful. And some of the additions towards the end slowed the pace a little I thought.

Too bad she dies during the opening credits of the sequel. All that work for nothing. :)
For years I couldn't forgive Fincher for that...and killing Hicks at the same timel too. I got over it though and now enjoy Alien3...but not nearly as much as the first two. They should have quit after the third one.

I just can't. I love Fincher but that opening sucks.

I heard the new A3 cut was pretty good though. Maybe I should check it out.

I dig all the extra goodies and scenery and weapons and gear and added story content and stuff in the extended Aliens cut but I believe the theatrical cut to be a better treatment of the material. Mainly in terms of pacing and reveals which I think are particularly important for a horror-action movie.

To borrow a James Cameron-ism, "reading these last few pages is like watching two monkeys try and f*ck a football."

I hate to respond to this post out of context, timing, days later, etc... but please tell me you don't think cameron is responsible for this saying. We've been making the monkey/football reference ever since I was way too young to use such terms... I'm talking 25+ years ago.

Oh, and yes... Bacon is good. Temptation doesn't come in the form of a tall, beautiful blonde... no, it comes in the form of bacon.

Can someone please tell me a movie that came out last year that had a good story/plot and tell me why avatar is a better movie story-wise?

1. The Hurt Locker, Sin Nombre, A Single Man, Zero Bridge, Treeless Mountain, Food Inc, etc, etc.
2. can't say Avatar is better story-wise but it offered a spectacle that everyone HAD to see. even me.

But I never got lost in the film, and wasn't engaged by the story or characters in any meaningful way. it was more like watching a fireworks display. it was strange, my attention kept drifting to the audience. I was often more interested in their reactions than anything the characters were doing. pretty though.

"Up"

and Avatar is not better in any way, although its use of 3-D was more effective.
