Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

A very forgettable movie that's been #1 in the theater for weeks now, and has set a new box-office record. And one which, for some reason, large numbers of people are not forgetting...

And one which, for some reason, large numbers of people are not forgetting...

...Because James Cameron spent a decade getting the special effects sorted out. It's the 3d, and it's drawing record numbers of people. It's an adrenalin and pheremone thrill ride.

Saw it in a theater in 2D with an audience whose response was basically indistinguishable from the audience response to the 3D and 3D IMAX presentations I have seen.

YMMV.

...and I'm not even going to ask what you mean by a 'pheremone' thrill ride...

But Jim, you only need to read that Confucious article to see that people are also responding to the story across the world in very personal ways that go beyond shallow entertainment. Sure, the spectacle gets people into the theater, but I don't think the film would have had this level of sustained box office success if the story wasn't also resonating on some level.

I once again just want to distinguish this idea that popularity equals quality. I
think back to when I was in school, and remember that the most popular people were often the most shallow and had the biggest ego's. And we all know that the only thing bigger than Avatar
is James Cameron's ego.

I think I am just riffing off the Linda Hamilton article that I read this morning talking about what it is like to be married to James Cameron. What a douchebag. It has made me dislike Avatar even more.

I think my favorite is:

"He used to say to me: 'Anybody can be a father or a husband. There are only five people in the world who can do what I do, and I'm going for that.'"

Maybe you should have said that before you decided to have children with this woman?

You only mentioned forgettableness, not quality. A movie doesn't make this amount of money unless people go back to see it again, and again. A guy on my facebook page has seen it 14 times. Granted he's a nut, but I think the box office success indicates it's not forgettable. You may find it so, and that's okay.

Linda Hamilton is a diagnosed manic depressive by her own admission. Something tells me Jim isn't the one primarily at fault for their relationship not working out. The fact that she felt compelled to air their dirty laundry in public is pretty douchebaggy too.

If I even implied that I believe that to be the case, I'll make clear right now that this is a concept which I am most emphatically not pimping...although sometimes popularity and quality do happen to coincide.

You know, they say that familiarity breeds contempt. Now, I could well be mistaken, because I am ignorant of your personal and professional history, but my bet is that you have little if any first-hand experience working or dealing with James Cameron. Would you like people running around bad-mouthing *you* and dissing *your* character, without benefit of having so much as met you? Yes, I know that Cameron is a public figure and that people tend to think that means they actually know the public figure at issue. But lacking (I suspect) any actual degree of familiarity, I think the contempt looks pretty shallow and really kind of embarrassing. Since we've all actually had first-hand contact with the film, maybe we ought to stick closer to discussing that.

I can't address anything Linda Hamilton has to say on the subject. But I'd sure hope never to be publicly judged by what an actress ex-wife has to say, about me...

Funny, but really, guys, what does it matter what size Jim's ego is? He could be the biggest a-hole on the planet. Makes no difference to whether his movies are good or not. I don't see why who James Cameron is or is not as a person is relevant. Elia Kazan was a communist black list snitch, an offense far worse than just being a jerk. Doesn't change my opinion of his films at all.

<- I guess that means no more m. night cracks, right? haha, great! :)

seriously though... this movie transcends criticism. and benefits little by defending it.

Oh, no, screw that guy! He's a douche! :) ...I remember that thread. I think I was only taking M. Night to task for the public persona he created, which I think is fair game, but it's noted.
