Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Avatar "clicks" for some, and doesn't for others. It's an emotional movie for those it really works with.

The only time myself or anyone else who I went to this movie with felt any sort of emotional reaction to ANYTHING was when the tree went down.

You got close there, but it's a shame..

Do you understand how distrubing that is, that we literally identified more with the TREE than with any of the CHARACTERS?

...that you clearly missed the entire point of the movie.

By being "disturbed" by that emotion, your cup appears to be quite full. You did not See the movie.

Those of us who did like the film have not been smoking anything.

---

It is literally unfathomable to me how anyone over the age of 5 or not a current Dragon Ball Z fan could possibly think this movie wasn't crap writing from start to finish.

<mod voice> And your opinions are all very valid, but go easy on the seeming belittling of those with differing opinions; not cool on 'user. </mod voice>

It over took Titanic yesterday and is now the #1 domestic movie. (not adjusted for inflation of course)

Goes both ways...

To paraphrase Chamber very badly (and why the hell not?) "If you don't agree with him, then everyone else is a damned idiot."

We can all discuss Chamber's opinion of the film professionally. Thank you.

The only time myself or anyone else who I went to this movie with felt any sort of emotional reaction to ANYTHING was when the tree went down. Do you understand how distrubing that is, that we literally identified more with the TREE than with any of the CHARACTERS? And that was only because we could infer our own position on trees. I promise if the tree would have spoken to the audience and been given a traditional character, it too would have become devoid of any soul.

For me personally, it wasn't that I felt for the tree, but for the Na-vi tribe's home being destroyed. Possibly some aspects of their way of life, not to mention many of their tribe would've been killed or seriously injured in the attack.

I know I'd be devastated if a place that was special or sacred to me was blown to pieces by a swarm of gunships.

I could go on for another twenty minutes as to why the special effects failed at accomplishing what they (I assume) were trying to accomplish, but one of the easiest things to point to is the rudimentary design of the creatures. If you look in ACTUAL nature, dogs do not have the same mouths as lizards or birds. Monkeys and people and bugs are not the same color. Nothing anywhere had any hair on it except for, miraculously, the "human-like" people who, of course, are the ONLY thing we're supposed to identify with on a human level as everything else are just "beasts" or "enlightened vegitation", right?

Pandora is an alien planet. What humanity will find out among the stars one day will probably be so weird and unearthly, that even the most inventive and "out there" science fiction visionaries will not come close to imagining.

The only imagery I will keep from this movie is, "Don't take my property, the thing that I own, kill and destroy everything that lives there, even though it's not THE sacred tree, it's MY tree on MY land that *I* own -- me. Anyone who wants a piece of earth that I OWN is evil and everything should die to keep that evil from taking anything from MY LAND. Now where's my saddle...?"

So let's say a hostile alien race descended from the sky and laid claim to your land, house, apt... where ever you live? You would just step aside thinking it would be evil to fight back against those that want to take everything from you by force?

Maybe I'm a primitive-minded heathen, but I don't see why fighting for your land or lively-hood is evil. Isn't that what the revolutionaries did in the Revolutionary War (yes I'm simplifying a bit, but for the sake of debate)?

Just distgusting. This movie was made by a very stupid man with way too much power. And, unfortunately, all the drones are falling in line, completely oblivious to the fact that they were just force fed the very thing this movie claimed to stand against.

So now I'm a drone because I liked Avatar. Buzz buzz, I'm a busy busy bee.

Shame on anyone who argued with me. You KNOW this script was bad, and if you didn't know you were brainwashed and lied to, hopefully the fog is starting to lift and you can step out of line.

Must watch AVATAR. ME AVATARD.... blaahaah... rahhh... ghauuuuhhhh.... dardy dar dar.... drooollllll.................:zombie_smiley:

To borrow a James Cameron-ism, "reading these last few pages is like watching two monkeys try and f*ck a football."

I think the biggest problem here is that Avatar is being taken well out of its intended objective, which is to be an entertaining blockbuster film. It does succeed in this regard IMO. Its no Citizen Kane, or Blade Runner if we match genres, but it certainly doesn't "suck" like every single attempt at a 3D Blockbuster film done to date.

The only problem I have with this film is that, to my eyes, its just an average story, entertaining, yes, but nowhere near the storytelling masterpiece or "film of the year" hype its receiving. It p#sses me off that it won the Golden GLobe for best film, and its being nominated in the same category in the Oscars. There are much, much better films out there this year than Avatar, not as impressive visually or as entertaining in a "new experiecnce" kind of way, which really is were Avatar excels, but in all common aspects that usually make for a great film- acting, script, Cinematography, Editing, Score, etc.

Kuddos to the Art department and their achievement of creating "Pandora" and the Na'vi, though. That's definitely Oscar material there.

Larry King just did a special on Avatar, it was a great piece, James Cameron and some of the cast were there. It might be on CNN's website to view.

I find lumber harvesting moving to watch, too.

Hmm. Axe Men: Pandora. I'll just file that away for next pitch season...

poo poo me, I was going to write a script or novel about some human lumberjacks being stalked by a mysterious creature on a human colony on an Earth-like extra-solar planet. No, seriously, I shi* you not. I'm gonna write this thing sometime soon.

But noooo!!!! Sad Max has to use his psi-powers to read my mind and then take this idea to Jim Cameron and I'll be screwed :crybaby:

Oh, cut Jim a break. Some day he will accomplish as much in his line of work, as you doubtless have in your own. He may even rise into the ranks of the A-list directors. Although it's probably a long shot.

No way. This Jim Cameron dude and his stupid 3D glasses isn't worth two-tenths of one of J.J. Abram's or Micheal Bay's tiniest and most constipated shi*s. He should just crawl back to Roger Corman while he still has a chance. I'm sure he could get a job painting miniatures on Battle Beyond the Stars II. Hey, isn't somebody making another Piranha film, in 3D no doubt? Didn't he do have something to do with the editing on Piranha part 2? Maybe he could be an editor's assistant or something?

Even I am surprised at the BEST PICTURE Nod but it is one of my FAV films ever. FAV and BEST are two different things too me.

I agree

James is a hack; that Titanic and Aliens and Terminator crap is overrated.

I'm not a big fan of Titanic, loved Aliens but prefer Scott's ALIEN by far and the first two Terminators were great. Lots of popcorn fun.

No masterpieces, but no hack either.

And yah, I know you were being sarcastic.

Lol I was I was

And everyone here knows I love Titanic; and golf is not a sport.

(here comes Blaine)

I prefer Aliens. It took a real cool idea that Scott did and put some pulse into it.

Yah, he turned it into an action film. A great one.

I prefer the slow burn that Scott created. Barely seeing the enemy. Nothing beats the scene in the tube with Dallas.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Aliens, but it didn't even feel Sci-Fi after watching ALIEN. That was a masterpiece.

To me anyway.

Right on cue:grin:

I agree with you on both counts. I, too, enjoyed Titanic. And I also prefer Aliens to Alien.

Now, that golf thing...:Drogar-Angry(DBG):

I think it's just "hip" to hate on Titanic and soon Avatar...
