Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Saw it for the 2nd time last night - the first time I've ever seen a movie a 2nd time in the theater - and it was still awesome. (Both times with slightly soft 35mm 2D projection.) I'm looking forward to the chance to see it in 3D some day.

Fantastic movie.

I wonder if this is normal for younger people these days, only seeing a movie once in the theater. I grew up right during the dawn of home video and remember seeing even average films a few times in the theater before VHS became commonplace. Something like Raiders of the Lost Ark or E.T. I'd see at least a dozen. Of course, films also stayed in the theaters for 6 months to a year.

I saw it yesterday in Imax 3D for the first time...all I gotta say is that it's a masterpiece. I'm gonna have to see it again.

32% of the people surveyed after seeing Avatar said they plan to see it again. That number is astonishing.

So, other than the official site of course; does anyone have a source for night high res images of Pandora's jungle at night?
I'm specifically looking for a nice wide shot with all the bioluminescence doing it's stuff. Like the one of Jake and Neytiri walking across the branch.

I know somewhere there is a digital artist with that as an awesome desktop background.

Not that I don't like my current desktop background...

(That's what it looks like in Photoshop ... it spans across my 3 monitors and looks sweet)

It's playing here until tomorrow night. 4 days unless it's held over. In 3D too, small screen though. Problem is, I can't raise 20 bucks to get across town and back and see the movie. Do you believe that? (ah, don't ask). Tomorrow is my last day to see the movie so maybe I'll get a 20 spot from someone for Christmas. Yeah right. Otherwise, shi*. Well, no, I meant to say FK.

PS. Clients never pay. 'Word'. :)

Unobtanium *is* a joke, within the context of the story. The people who discovered it on Pandora started calling it 'unobtanium,' and the name stuck.

JAMES CAMERON saw the teaser for our Spoof Trailer... and dissed it!

You're fortunate. Now you have a really good conversation-starter to use, when next you meet...

just got back. feeling pretty underwhelmed. Avatar just wasn't for me, I guess. and the appeal of the 3D experience is fading fast.

Zak, I like you because you are the ying to my yang. I hope we work together in the future.

As for the dissing of the parody... I think Kholi, Garret, and MattyG did a sweet job. I couldn't tell the big difference between Olivia's avatar and the real movie. Close enough for me! James has to say stuff like that to justify the 1/2 billion $ budget. :P

Great interviews! very entertained! LOL @ Cameron's comments: One of the design requirements is to make Neytiri *blank*able ...

I just wanted to throw my two cents into the discussion here. I haven't read the rest of the thread so I don't know how much discussion there has been about the 3D technology or whatever, but to be perfectly honest it just wasn't for me. I think part of the reason I love cinematography so much is that it's more than just its technical aspects, and its artistic aspects. I think it's become an integral part of an entire form and medium that conditions people to decode its language, and part of that language is showing three dimensional spaces (the world of the story) on a two dimensional plane (the screen).

With the advent of 3D (if it can even be called that) that integral part is just kind of...thrown out the window. Many times during my 3D viewing of Avatar I found myself shutting my right eye just so I could return to seeing the film as I'd seen other films. It's worth mentioning though that this is the first time I've seen a 3D film, and maybe that has something to do with it. But to me I think it's more than just not being used to it, I think it really has to do with appreciating the way visual language manipulates us. And that's no to say that it's a bad thing that it does that or that Avatar suffers for doing it differently, but I think that the film would have been just as good if not better if I had seen it NOT in 3D.

Zak, I'd honestly like to hear some reasons why you didn't like. Not for any specific motive, but I'd like to actually see a discussion of the content of the film rather than just the technology, just to get a discussion of it as a film rather than some sort of event that needs to be liked by all.

Just saw Avatar in 3D here in New Zealand...wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, although some nob heads were sitting in the seats me and my friend booked and wouldnt move. We were 5 mins late and the bloody film had started (I was getting an extension on my parking ticket).

Very unoriginal story tho, but then again, what is original in Hollywood these days, they are spewing out sequels and remakes all over the show.

Anyhow, we ended up getting way better seats in the middle so it was all good. And we all know Avatar was solely going to be liked for its special effects/CGI.

But, I will never watch it again, once is enough for me.
