Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

I honestly think it was much better than the cartoon rep it seems to be getting here...

Some of those shots look extremely real. If you notice, most of the shots that don't look real are the things you know for a fact couldn't exist...I think no matter how well it's textured or animated that's a normal thing to feel.

Some of that stuff looked fantastic, and the wide shots got more towards the cartoon style. That's typical.

I know nothing about the movie really, so I'm pretty interested.

it's just the faces to me... makes me think of pixar vs. dreamworks animation movies...

Like the difference between mapping real facial expressions on to cg characters vs. creating those facial expressions... one tends to give a "painted on" look to the faces and lacks depth in my opinion. not really sure how to verbalize what i mean.

keeping in mind of course we're seeing a short little teaser...

but, the bodies as a whole, and the environment, and the fine detail (less the faces) looks pretty cool to me.

The beginning of that trailer looks fantastic. Very photo-real to me.

And then things go downhill when the marine transfers bodies. Then it seems to become a kids cartoon in my mind. There is just something about the look that screams "I've seen this before and it was in an animated kids movie".

Battle for Terra....

But IMHO, the animation quality isn't even close between the two.

I know what you mean and ya from what I saw in the trailer it seemed like it was lacking depth. Peter Jackson/Neil B did this sooooooooo well in King Kong and District 9. Makes a huge difference.

just the faces (but even then, some of the later closeups looked really nice... the "this is great" one wasn't a good intro to them imo though.

Just the fact there's a new James Cameron movie to watch is all I need.

On a side note, how well is Sam Worthington going? Clash of the Titans could be a really great remake, loved the original.

I really hope it's just my small screen, or it's a bad trailer.

I really don't want Cameron to pull a Lucas-style piece of poo-poo.

But you forgot. Those little things floating about them will be in 3D!

LOL...Oh, man...I sooooo want this movie to be great, but I'm not encouraged so far. At least my expectations are considerably lowered so I can watch the film with a fair mind. Please, oh, please don't stink!

It's much better written and acted than anything Lucas has done in the last 20 years.

Yeah, I know, damning with faint praise.

It won't stink :) The story will be good.... and honestly, I am liking the look more and more!

I so wish I could go to Avatar day tomorrow!

Feh. Anyone with time to waste could compile a similar list pulling stills from a few dozen other films. What, a MC two-shot in silhouette profile is now enough to create linkage between movies? And set in a forest, etc?

Please.

haha! come on... this is really pretty darn funny. i like batutta's comparison with the characters surrounded by glowy things best. execution being an all together different matter, the superficial similarities are remarkable.
