Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

What you see in the trailer is representative of content in the film.

As far as the need for a wheelchair - it's covered in the story. At least, in the last draft I read.
Cool. As long as there's a reason for it I'm game. It's just a nitpick.

I'm sure there's a better trailer coming down the pike soon. The CG is a downer for me though.

Watched it... thought the CG looked OK... however the storyline intrigues me a lot... it was a well paced teaser, left me wanting more :)

If anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt it's Cameron but...One more gripe. Why go to all the trouble of creating aliens in CGI and then make them bipedal humanoids? They even have five toed feet! Couldn't you just have painted some actors blue and given them latex appliances? They made Elijah Wood three feet tall I'm sure they could fake it in reverse and make the blue aliens look 10 feet tall.

CG characters were just more practical in terms of the pipeline that was developed for the project. Much greater flexibility, in development and posting.

Bipedal humanoid because there's a certain degree of familiarity they have to have for the audience, in order for the audience to connect.

Still doesn't make sense to me. I remember Cameron talking about making Aliens with a no pride approach, that if he could get the same result by throwing a rubber chicken against a wall he'd shoot that. This seems like technology just for the sake of technology.

Completely agree. They're bipeds, but they're also very different. Unlike Michael Bay with transformers, James Cameron believes the audience can connect to non-humans on the screen. But Bay has one idea right, the audience needs to connect. This is why subconsciously they need to be like us in at least a few ways.

I mean if they were five legged beings, with slug like bodies, I'm not sure I would care so much if one slug fell in love with another slug. I'd say "eww, gross."

That's what I loved about Cameron. The Aliens BTS looks like some of our own shorts with him scrambling to make things work any way he can and not taking no for an answer. And with the budgets going up, his movies certainly have not gotten any better...

hopefully this will rock. I remember being scared of the EFX in watchmen from the trailer, but when I got to the theater I absolutely could not believe how good things like Dr. Manhattan looked. So...

Although, this just doesn't look like a very good movie anyway, from the trailer.

And I don't know what hacks they got to do Art Direction, but JEEZE...

I connected to the Prawns in District 9 and they weren't pretty. :)

I thought the same thing, although the Prawns are bipedal humanoid beings to some degree. I understand the emotional theory, but I think sometimes in the rush to play with new toys people too often don't step back and think, "Is this going to make the movie any better?" Motion capture may make the job of the animators easier and give the director more flexibility in post, but that does not mean the end result is going to be any better. In fact, some things may be lost in the process.

...

I saw the trailer today. I am unimpressed. The beginning of the trailer looked great. Then when the blue things came into play - all hopes of this movie were washed away. I closed the quicktime file and I continued about my day.

It looks like a kids movie. Just a kids movie with rockets, explosions, angry lizard things, and floating rocks.

i would have thought the cg would have looked better than it appears in the trailer considering the budget and all the supposed new technology I heard being talked about in relation to it.

later,
Jason

After watching the trailer twice, if I had seen that preview in the theaters with no previous knowledge, I'd definitely be very excited about the movie. However, after all the hype I was a bit underwhelmed. Agreed that District 9 CGI looked more real.

Is this going to be a lame-o 3D glasses movie???
