Hey All,

I've been asked to shoot a live music event tonight. They want to record sound into my camera from a soundboard. How would I go about doing this?

Also in terms of monitoring and getting the best sound, do you have any tips? I have ML installed.

Thanks.

Definitely turn off AGC. If you have the money, look into getting a preamp. That will let you listen to your audio and give you better results.

Well i would get a bunch of adapters because you dont know what type of connection you will be able to get off of the board. You can go to your local guitar store and find most of these
xlr - 1/8th
1/4th stereo to 1/8th stereo
1/8th to 1/8th

I would turn down the digital gain to 0db because you should get plenty of power off the of the board. And turn up the analog as little as possible

For monitoring audio bring your canon SD video out cable and connect the two adio cables (red and white) to one of these adapters

then plug your headphones into that.

1) Of course, otherwise the sound won't be constant.
2) A preamp for this particular purpose isn't required, see NoahK's quote.
Remember you'll only be able to record 12 minutes at a time.
Not if you use the MagicLantern hack, and decrease the bitrate: the way you have more room before you reach the 12mins/4GB limit. 4GB being the limit to break in this case.
I'd beg borrow or still a digital recorder like a Zoom and use that instead.
That would be the best solution so far. Sync the sound in post would be a breeze then. And the sound would be clean as it would be recorded directly from the sound board.
