I recently spent most of my money on a T2i, case, lights, lenses, etc. but I didn't pick up a mic for it. So I was wondering if I could use my AT2020 condenser microphone on the T2i? Has anyone tried this?
Aside from the fact that this is a really big mic to try and rig onto a camera, and aside from the fact that it requires phantom power that the T2i does not provide, it is in every other sense the entirely wrong type of microphone for on-camera sound work. It's designed specifically for studio recording, and even if you could rig it to the camera and make it work with the camera's power just the simple need for wind protection is going to be a nasty challenge.
Also, recording straight to the T2i is a bad idea, even with the proper mic and external gear. The T2i's audio, due to cheap pre-amps and non-defeatable AGC, is crunchy and hissy and just plain bad. And on-camera is the worst/last place to have a mic.
But if you are convinced that you absolutely must have a mic on your camera, save up (or write a last-minute letter to Santa) for a Rode VideoMic. I use one on my T2i, though I have it only for better reference audio and almost nothing I record to camera ever makes it to the final mix.
NOT if you plan to use for anything beside a guide track or for a "home movie" sound.
for anything professional absolutely NOT.
these cameras have Mercedes video capabilities but Fisher price audio.
do yourself a favor and plan for an external recorder.
Dont waste time and energy attempting to get anything usable from the camera audio and jut get an external recorder and be happy, sans ulcers.
