Audio Question

That's not going to help you much. It's a phantom power supply, so it's not intended for just any XLR-equipped mic. This is for supplying the power needed to operate a condenser mic, so it's pretty useless for dynamic mics and for XLR input from wireless receivers. Plus, it doesn't adapt to the 1/8" TRS your camera needs (assuming, since this is posted in the Canon APS-C section).

Which camera do you have? That can make a huge difference in what your options are.

Your Canon APS-C camera has pre-amps, but they're terrible. Worse, your camera has AGC (automatic gain control) that renders the audio pretty much useless, and may not have the ability to turn it off or to manually control the input levels. The 7D has no reasonable options. The T2i and T3i can be remedied by installing Magic Lantern. With a couple of the recent models, Canon added manual level control and selectable AGC, but I've lost track of which model does which. By turning off the AGC and controlling the input level, you can use an external device with better pre-amps to send a stronger signal to the camera, thus allowing the input level on the camera to be turned down which will minimize the pre-amp noise that the camera adds.

Further, your DSLR needs a mic-level input, so whatever you do needs to have a mic-level output over 1/8" TRS or you'll have to use a padded cable to knock a line-level signal down to mic-level for the camera.

So, assuming that you're using something other than the 7D, and that you have factory-installed AGC selection and manual level control or that you have ML installed, you have a couple of options:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MixPre-D (offers a mic-level output designed for DSLR)

Thank you. I'm using a t3i...with ML. The t2i has the better audio controls with ML though. I was going to use that thing above with an xlr to 3.5 adapter cable...my mic is a condenser mic..you dont thinkit willwork?

The ART device is a phantom power unit with XLR out. It's not as simple as getting an XLR>1/8" adapter, as that must be wired properly to pass the mono signal into a stereo, unbalanced input.

Problem #2, you're still using the camera's pre-amps for all the gain, so expect added noise.

XLR adapter devices from Beachtek and Juicedlink are available with phantom power and active pre-amps.

Just remember that, no matter which way you go, recording in-camera audio on a DSLR is still going to have shortfalls. This is simply a limitation of DSLR shooting.
