AC90: Audio quality question

How is the audio quality on the AC90 compared to the HVX200?

I am considering the AC90 but I need top quality audio, and the HVX200 has been very good in that respect.

I use Sennheiser ME-3 but the more important thing is I record instruments via instrument mics, using a high quality mic preamp, and then bring that signal into the camera at line level.

That's why I'm worried about compressed audio - I need the instruments to sound good.

I just noticed this on the Panasonic site:

The camcorder features two locking XLR audio inputs with switches for mic/line, two RCA audio outputs. The camera can also record 2 channels of uncompressed audio.

Uncompressed, should be all good then!? I was worried the audio would be compressed.

Audio is recorded as Dolby Digital, if you look at the actual specs. Sometimes the wording of the marketing pieces gets confusing. They probably mean you can INPUT two channels of uncompressed into the camera...but it does get compressed when recorded inside the camera.

I use the AC130, rather than the 90, but audio compression to AVCHD should be similar on both cameras. On my 130, it's really very good. I get compliments on the sound in my documentary work, and I get good sound in the studio. Needless to say, I'm pretty pleased with it--it's about as good as the P2s I work with. It sounds like you're using a good preamp and good mics, so I think you'd get really good sound with it.
