Attaching Nikon lens to GH1

i just got a nikon to m4/3 adapter for my GH1 and i have attached my Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8. i have changed to shoot w/o lens in the custom settings but it usually pops up with "this lens is not attached properly" or it will just show black but if i take a picture it will actually take a picture. not sure what i'm doing wrong here. please help.

Make sure shoot w/out lens is set to "ON", and that the adapter is snapped into place correctly. My GH1 will do this sometimes, even with the digital M-4/3 lenses, so I have to re-seat the lens to correct it.

Also, make sure you have the ISO to manual, since it won't adjust ISO properly via the meter when using a manual lens....so you might get "black" in some cases.

Good luck!

And firmly attach the lens adapter to the body. Sometimes they don't register as being properly attached and if you give it a bit more of a twist it'll start recognizing that it's attached.

i have tried all of the above and it still is just showing up as black BUT when i align the adapter, with the nikon lens on it, to the red dots, my viewfinder shows what the lens sees, but when i turn it and hear it click, it goes back to black. i have attached and detached the lens to the adapter and adapter to gh1 body several times and the shoot w/out lens is set to on.

You've probably already tried this, but...is the aperture on your Nikon stopped down? Have you made sure the aperture is open wide enough to expose properly? Is there an "Auto" and/or "Manual" setting on your lens? I ask this because I have an old Canon 50mm that will "stick" to a specific aperture when set on Auto, so that even in you adjust the iris ring, the aperture will not change. You have to set it to "Manual", and sometimes rotating the lens on the adapter can accidentally make the lens switch over to Auto. I would check that.

thanks dvbrother, this lens doesn't have a auto/manual lock on it. i have also tried another nikon lens and it doesn't work either. when i hold the lens & adapter up to the camera aligned to the red holes it shows perfectly but when i twist to attach i lose picture and its just black. i'm looking into a different adapter now.

also DanDOF, i do have the exact adapter that Ciecio7 sells, so i'm not sure what is up.

what i noticed when you detach a lens from the gh1, is that there is a button on the right side of where the lens attaches and if that gets pressed it seems to turn the screen black. i am wondering if the little groove on my adapter isn't properly lined up. any ideas?

In your first post you say " it will just show black but if i take a picture it will actually take a picture." When you take a picture, is it an exposed image? Or is it still black?

My hunch, though, is that it's a bad adapter if your getting a "This lens is not attached properly" warning.

it does take an exposed picture even though both viewfinders show black. i figured it was a bad adapter as well and am looking for a new one. i dont want to spend a lot of money on it but they all seem so similar on ebay.

That doesn't necessarily apply to all AF lenses, only G series lenses. The G lenses don't have aperture control rings.

Had the same issue when I first got my Nikon adapter. Try changing the actual mode. I.E. Movie to manual or one of the other settings. This worked for me.

i got my yashica/contax adapter today too and tried it with 2 different lenses on my gh1 and still nothing. they will take pictures but still says reconnect lens and there is never a picture on the viewfinders. i tried changing the mode to all of the other settings and my shoot w/out lens is still on. could it be my firmware? i have version 1.2 for both body and lens firmware. anyone else with this problem? so frustrating!

Maybe a stupid question but how did you set your exposure? auto, aperture prio or shutter prio or manual? Have you tried changing this and see what happens?

Also I have both the ciecio7 and Novoflex adapter, with both you can change aperture on Nikon G lenses, I find the Novoflex better than the ciecio7.

i have tried changing my exposure settings to all of the different options. i just find it odd that it will take pictures just fine but not display through the viewfinders but once i put my kit lens on the viewfinders work.

i have toggled the LCD/Viewfinder button and still no change with either Nikon adapter or Contax/Yashica adapter. doesn't seem like both adapters are the problem if they were purchased from 2 different places.

anyone have the lens firmware version 1.1? i updated to version 1.2 and want to see if maybe thats why these adapters aren't working.
