GH4 Atomos Shogun... without screen?

Hi there,

Recently I tested the Atomos Shogun with my GH4 and the results was great: to work with 4:2:2 subsampling in DaVinci is glorious. The thing is I don't need a 7 inch display, I already have the GH4 viewfinder, but I want to encode in 4:2:2 Pro Res. Is there any device only to get the HDMI signal and convert it into Pro Res files to a SSD or card?

Thank you everyone.

This has been brought up a few times. Some of us that own a FS700 wish for a
'recorder only' solution as well. The Odyssey 7Q+ is fantastic......but sometimes you don't
want the extra bulk of the big monitor. It would be nice if they were separate. A tiny
recorder that you could just hook off the back or top of the camera, and the monitor
that you could bring out when you needed it. But for some fast moving stuff, it gets
to be a royal pain having the extra size of a monitor and trying to figure out where to
position it and so on.

Right, we need a Ninja Star 4K. So, let's wait, NAB is comimg, crossed fingers. Thanks!
For me personally, a Ninja Star 4K probably wouldn't work. I've got a Sony FS700,
so I need a SDI connection, not HDMI. And something that can deal with the Sony
raw output.....more like an Odyssey 7Q+ but without the big screen.

Another thing I would encourage Atomos (or Convergent Design, or Blackmagic, etc.) to do when they come up with a 4K recorder without a monitor is to have it record in Cinema 4K resolution, not just UHD. It makes a difference.

I'm done with Atomos.

So many promises on too many products.

They still haven't provided the firmware updates (promised last year...) for their current Ninja Star to work correctly with their own Atomos HDMI triggering.

They've also closed their forums, so now there is no public centralised point of user 'issues'. Didn't they advertise (at the beginning) the Shogun being able to do C4K and saying it will come via a FW update - only to it never also to appear..

(I see you can still view the forums) - http://forum.atomos.com/showthread.php?54059-Ninja-Star-Timecode-Triggering-from-GH4

Its one thing to keep on replacing product with newer ones, but to not fix or deliver on features and then to release new products is just poor.

Unless this request is all about cost, I don't see any advantage to such a beast. By the time you create a HD caddy and battery plates, your basically at the same size as a 5" monitor. I'd personally want the ability to apply LUTs or de-squeeze anamorphic footage during shooting.

Perhaps I'm missing something (pun not intended ).

The PIX-E5 series from Video Devices is definitely much smaller in physical size, so although it's not exactly what is being asked for, it's a possibility (and it's much more robust and offers C4K recording as well, unlike Atomos gear).

HTH

Paul :)

Ninja Star is 8.9 x 5.8 x 2.0 cm.

PIX E-5 is 13.7 x 8.6 x 4.1 cm, with a 13 cm (5") monitor.

But, if someone decides to go with either micro SD cards or small form (1.8") internal SSD, they can make the recorders thinner. Mushkin's 120 GB internal SSD is .5 x 5.4 x 7.85 cm
