FS7: Atomos shogun or XQD cards

Hi all FS7 users, I am planning to get the FS7 in a couple of weeks or so, I was informed by one of the resellers that if I my budget cant stress for an external monitor then i should loose the 2x 128gb xqd cards and go for the shogun.

My question is should I go down this route of having an external recorder/monitor unit or get cards instead as my budget only can but one and loose the other.

best
Jeff

Why must you shoot with an external monitor? I usually have worked with an FS without an external monitor (well... a director's monitor, but that is different).

Your reseller is giving you dreadful advice. Even if you need an external recorder, which you almost certainly don't, you still need to record internally as a fail safe. RAW to 4K looks great out of the Odyssey, and it's certainly the best solution for the FS7, but only if you need 4K RAW or ProRes, for anything else the internal XAVC is the better choice.

Quite classic of resellers, the average salesperson knows less than the average forum goer! (and the average forum poster is pretty damn appalling! :-P No offense intended haha.... you folk in this sub forum are surprisingly ok guys! :) It is the rest of them that I worry about...)

Hi IronFilm,
I normally shoot with a client onsite and quite often I am having to playback footage during shoots, have an external monitor in my setup would allow me to work much faster and not having to keep showing then footage,

I am guessing they are used to working this way with their previous DP

Just wondering, but how do you shoot cheaply with FS7 for hours (12hrs+) with XQD cards?
seems like buying an external recorder with 1TB or 2TB SSDs comes out a lot cheaper to record such an event.

Not really practical to shoot long form with cards. Unless you use a low bitrate CODEC. But if you're doing 4K 60P, that's 15 minutes per 64GB card. That's a lot of swapping and dumping. Even a Shogun with a 480 GB HDD will store something like 5 hours of UHD 24P.

For a 12 hour event, I'd seriously consider a long GOP CODEC.
