FS7: Atomos shogun or XQD cards

Hi all FS7 users, I am planning to get the FS7 in a couple of weeks or so, I was informed by one of the resellers that if I my budget cant stress for an external monitor then i should loose the 2x 128gb xqd cards and go for the shogun.

My question is should I go down this route of having an external recorder/monitor unit or get cards instead as my budget only can but one and loose the other.

I recommend internal XQD cards incase you want to shoot with the FS7 stripped down. Otherwise you're always going to look at having external mon, cables, etc.. which may or may not bother you depending on your situation.

Personally I hate cables, and moreso I hate the thought of recording through them.

For compact, stripped-down FS7 work as Dennis says, use XQD cards.

For external recorder, I recommend the Odyssey 7Q+ much much more than I would a Shogun. I find serious design flaws with the Shogun as well as other limitations. My second choice would be the VideoDevices PixE. Still some limitations but far superior construction than the Shogun.

Ponder your decision carefully. Remember that the camera is often a small part of investment in a total kit-- media, lenses, power, proper support, external monitor/recorder-- all add to the bottom line cost.

Odyssey 7Q+, by the way, is reduced to $1795 including one 256gb SSD. I don't work for Convergent-Design. Just a long-time user and from the journalist side of my life one who has used a range of products.

Your reseller is giving you dreadful advice. Even if you need an external recorder, which you almost certainly don't, you still need to record internally as a fail safe. RAW to 4K looks great out of the Odyssey, and it's certainly the best solution for the FS7, but only if you need 4K RAW or ProRes, for anything else the internal XAVC is the better choice.

Yes, get cards.
The 7Q+ is a fantastic device (I have one) but it's not really needed for the FS7 and would only add unnecessarily to the bulkiness and complexity of the rig.

I have to agree. Get the cards. I shot some to shows with external recorders, but I much prefer to record internally.

I shot internally to XQD cards (4K) and got a theater release of my film. The gatekeepers could care less what codec you shoot in, all they care about is that it looks good on a 40 foot screen, and mine did. High action shots could require a stronger codec though.

Thank you Doug, Yoak, Fotojorno, Liam, Ron, Ned and Dennis, ok will get cards and save up for a Odyssey 7Q+, i am in the UK so the pound is a bit weak at the moment so.

or see if I can get an EVF if some money is left over

Thank you all

XQD cards are a must. I'd look at the Video Devices Pix as a smaller alternative to the 7Q.

I'm toying with the idea of getting one.

I sold my 7Q+ and shoot exclusively with the internal codec on the FS7 because I think it's a better option. If you need a small monitor, get the SmallHD 502.

Even more important. If you don't have one already, a real fluid head tripod. Something in the Sachtler FSB-6 range.

I agree, BTW we call that an analog image stabilizer.

And I am happy with my sachtler Ace, cheaper than the fsb6 and with carbon legs (not so cold in winter, aluminium freezes on your hands).

Would just add to this thread... that depending upon the type of shoots you'll do most - really depends on whether or not you'll need an external recorder. The biggest limitation of the FS7 imo - is the implementation (or lack there-of) of LUTs. None in playback, none in S&Q, etc. So, if you're shooting with a director / client and need to show them a really nice image "on set" - especially during playback or don't want to burn in and limit your post choices, you are going to need an external recorder. But if by yourself - or with someone who's knowledgeable - internal is great.

My understanding is that the FS7 has some real issues recording RAW externally in any case. I believe Ben even sold his Odyssey and whatnot for this reason. Not sure if that applied to Proress 4K recorded externally though. Any updates on that issue ? In any case it really appears a strong camera for internal, otherwise you might need to think about other solutions....
