Atomos Ninja Now Shipping According To Press Release - SDI Samurai at $1495.00 USD

David - Couple of thoughts for the ninja and Samurai - some more screen functionality for calibration including blue only mode. Is this possible? Im thinking if I can have a workable monitor and recorder in one unit, it negates the need to hang two things. What's the possibility of this?

I would say that this is most likely possible, but would need to talk to the developers. It is certainly our intention to continuously add functionality to all Atomos Platform devices. Thanks for the suggestion!

Does anyone know if the output of the AF100 HDMI is 4.2.2 10 bit ? course it would be useless of buyng a Ninja otherwise if not

It's absolutely not useless buying a Ninja even if the camera output is 8 bit. You will see significant improvements in quality by bypassing the harsh in-camera compression, and, since Ninja converts all footage to 10 bit, while this doesn't add to the quality, it does mean that all subsequent processing will be done at 10 bit resolution - idea for dissolves and grading etc.

No 10 bit I gues course the AF100 is neither on HDMI output it's 4.2.2 8 bit also on the SDI output
anyway its worth to capture on 4.2.2 10 bit !

A question for David!

David I sure want to order the Samurai at it's release, but I realy needs to be sure if it will capture 1080 24p from the AF100 SDI output on the Samurai.
If the AF 100 SDI output is 'ON' it supports Uncompressed 24PsF 4:2:2, 8 Bit as they say, when record format is selected at 1080 24p HD on camera.
Do you have allready done some tests with that? I realy dont want to struggle with converting interlaced to progressive, it's never a perfect way.

Kind regards,
Katty

So I see the Samurai is a little bigger than the Ninja since it has a bigger 5 inch higher resolution screen. Are there any plans for a smaller SDI version that is a similar size to the Ninja? As much as I like what you are doing by combining a recorder and monitor I feel the monitor will, at least at first, be lacking some features. So until the Samurai firmware gets updated enough to implement the features I use and love with my monitor, it means I'll be hanging two monitors off my camera. The thought of this in run and gun situations makes me cringe. Now if it were smaller like the Ninja I would be the first in tine.

Hi Brian,

You could got a point and might not. I work with with the IKAN 8inch HD monitor now. But if the the samurai screen gives me a fair deal for pulling focus on HD,
I would not mind to get rid of the IKAN or keep it as a backup , altouch to me its not for run and gun situationsbut rather for on set, but it could be a point when
it come to action scenes with fast camera movement.

We haven't tested this specific set-up yet, but will be able to do the 24p re-extraction in real-time on the Samurai.

Brian, actually the Samurai is barely bigger than the Ninja. The bigger screen goes further towards the edges, and it is a tiny bit longer (I'm sorry, I don't have the exact dimensions to hand) so I don't think you'll even notice the increased size of the unit unless you measure it.

David,

Try to keep in mind that the Samurai should be able to reconize 24PsF signal to take action for recording in 24p. I just read it on the forum.
tought it was relivant to take note of that.

Would it be possible to trigger camera or Ninja via LANC somehow? It would make it easier to just have to press one button and both camera and Ninja starts.

The AF100 doesn't use LANC, that's a Sony protocol. There'd have to be some sort of LANC->Panasonic protocol converter.

The Samurai should be able to trigger off of the camera's record button, if they implement the SDI record flag properly.

Let's hope Atomos hits the ground running with Panasonics SDI record flag!

One reason why I keep bringing it up -- I don't want it to get forgotten! I'd like to see support (from Convergent and from Atomos) for the SDI record flag, and for the user bits "duplicate frame" or "duplicate field" flag, so that they can automatically strip out pulldown and store just the native frames.

I feel like it's the dvx100 days with advanced pulldown :)
