C100: Atomos Drops the Ninja Assassin. Looks pretty great!

I'm assuming it has the same not-so-great build quality as the shogun... which is why they wrapped it in plastic, heh.

B&H has the Assassin in stock. In comparison the PIX gets more marks for being unbreakable. I don't like the red wrapper in the Assassin.

The Assassin has a 7 inch monitor vs 5 inch of the comparable PIX-E5H. Interestingly though the Assassin is in stock in B&H the PIX-E series is not in stock. Competition is good for us.

That it is, I am looking to get a new monitor with a better screen than my Ninja2. Now the choice just got harder. It would be much easier if the Assassin we just record DCI 4K as I already have most of the accessories for it.

I just ordered this today. I use the Shogun already for my C100M2 (overkill, I know), so the Assassin will be great for my 5D backup cam and I'll port it over when I get another C100M2. I love the Shogun. Works awesome so I'm assuming this one will work just the same and have everything I need.

It's ok. Not the greatest. I think the bumper and the aftermarket cages give it what it would need.

what about the quality of the shogun's screen?

color accurate-ish?

any thoughts on exposure tools-waveform and vectorscope?

thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

be well.

I really wish they'd kept the Ninja's smaller screen. That big honker is kind of a pain to place and not have it in the way.

I too love the Blade's screen, size and color accuracy. I have thought about buying the Spyder color calibration unit for it though. Generally, I am pretty easy on my gear and I don't shoot Deadliest Catch or Ice Road Truckers so my gear is not generally subject to abuse. Knowing SD products, I am willing to bet there is nothing built as well on the market but it is a heavy little beast too and for certain uses, the 7" screen is better. My eyes are right on the edge of always being able to judge focus on my Blade screen, especially in direct sunlight when I have to improv together a sun hood out of Cine Foil attached to the thing that Atomos optimistically refers to as a sun shade. Even though a 7" size is a bit more of a PITA to lug and mount, it would make for easier focusing for me. 70% of my shooting happens on sticks or slider to the extra size isn't that big of a deal.

B&H doesn't seem to offer a sun hood for the Assassin, that alone would rule it out for shooting exteriors. Hopefully Atomos got a clue and realized that yes, we like to shoot outdoors with their products, maybe they need to develop a real sun hood? I love how in the demo reel, they show everyone just nicely shooting away in daylight with no hood. I am afraid the real world is a little different.

So build quality on the Shogun, not so great, huh? I think the Blade is built pretty well, it's light, a solid feeling block of aluminim, very little protruding to break off or be snapped off.

Looks great. But why in a C300mk1 thread? My C300mk1 has neither timecode nor trigger out on the HDMI port. So making this Ninja Assassin HDMI only recorder work with the C300mk1 will be a pretty complicated affair, afaik. I am sure it will work great with C100 & C100mk2, though! :-) Heck, it might even work with the C300mk2....?????

I don't mean to be a grumpy troll. I've just seen this mistake made a few times (pairing C300mk1 w/HDMI recorder) and I thought it beneficial to let people know. :-)

I don't use the vectorscope at all but focus peaking and waveform work great. Out of the box the color accuracy was pretty spot on for my c100m2. I was impressed with that. All in all, I love using it and can't wait to get the NA.

My mistake, I couldn't post without a header choice so I arbitrarily selected C300 without even thinking about that. Not sure if I can change that now, I will give it a try.

*Edit - just changed it to C100.

I am torn between this and paying slightly more for the Shogun. I need SDI so I guess the Assassin really won't work for me.

That's $700 for an SDI plug ! I'd rather buy an atomos S2H connect converter. plugs in the battery slot.

I'm tempted about this kind of product, because as much as I like my ninja blade, it can't record 50p for my C100 MKII...and no lut, no framelines, no 4K for the future...
But even if I can sell my blade for $500-600, that's still another $700 to buy the assassin ....worth it ?

I'm also guessing this will be compatible with the proper sunhood the shogun has.
