At last... I took the plunge & Ordered an HMC40:

So, after a LONG time of looking and waiting and worrying about my school contracts NOT being renewed this semester, things aligned up just right and I placed my order today.

Best case is that I'll have it by Wednesday, January 13 and worst case is Tuesday, January 19.

Show off! ;)

Glad for you, Bob. Im still a week away from ordering mine.
I guess it gives me another week of trying to find the best pricing.

Congratulations Bob! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

I'll be counting the moments until your first creation.

Kind Regards,
Dan Carter

Thanks,

A lot of things had to line up before I could place the order...

(1) Temptation #1, Panasonic offers a Blu-ray player with purchase before January 31, 2010.

(2) Temptation #2, B&H lowers the price by $150 for an unknown time period....

(3) Nice, BUT if I didn't get the contracts for work at the school(s), it would be stupid for me to spend any money now. The odds have started to shift in my favor as I'll have 4 different classes at 3 different schools.

Dan,

I don't think I'll ever be able to shoot the kind of cool videos that you take, but I'll try...

Bob

B&H lower price when added to cart ($1849.00) is same as Amazons lower price ($1849.00)
They both offer a free shipping 'ground' option.
I think I'd rather purchase from B&H, just as a way of wagging the finger at 'the man' (if even a little.) ;)

Sounds great, Andrew. Maybe trim your price a bit more to match the others listed and that would be doable. :)

$50 doesnt seem like much, but hey! Thats the cost of a dead cat for the rode videomic.
And in our economy today, Im watching closely every single dollar i spend.

Edit - Just got your PM. I can understand how undercutting price wars can hurt... especially when dealing with larger companies who can afford to undercut you and stay afloat.

Congratulations Bob. You're going to have a lot of fun shooting with your new HMC40. I think of it as a poor man's EX1 (but probably more comfortable to shoot with hand-held).

First let me say something to Andrew, Specialized Communications Corp.

I did consider going with your company mostly because you do come on the forum to help out and B&H Does not or if they do, I sure don't see them.... If something goes wrong, support does become a big issue.

In the end, I got the impression that you weren't able to match B&H's price. The dollar difference may be minor, but I'm really pushing the limits to purchase this camera and every dollar counts.

To everyone else:

I really had to keep the total cost down, so I was able to get only 3 key items: the HMC40, the Azden SGM-2x mic, and the Pearstone Camera bag.

For now, I'll have to use the Beachtec DXA-4s XLR adapter. Not an ideal choice compared to the Panasonic XLR adapter, but that will have to wait until summer time. I have the Beachtek, so I could avoid spending the extra $300 right now...

Likely the order will not ship until Monday and is shipping FedEx super saver. When I worked at EIZO (a computer Monitor company), we had nothing but problems with UPS. FedEx was 1,000 times better to deal with.

It might even come 1 week from now. Great if it shows up before Sunday of next week, there's a Smart Car Rally on January 17, that I'm going to shoot a short video of...

I teach Electronics & Robotics classes at both El Camino College and Compton College. The school does not pay me to shoot videos, but I love to do it anyway. (The videos do help promote our robotics program.)

I shoot video for fun:

Hey Bob,

My post was in response to Macfinn. Thanks for the mention though. We'll be here to help you out. Unfortunately we're in business to make money, not sell cameras at cost like B&H. We just can't compete with that so we try to add value in other ways such as paying to support the best pro video forum ever, and to make sure you have a live voice on the phone to TALK to. TALK, meaning not just taking an order but to "flap gums" about projects and answer questions etc... There are two things that separate a box house from us and that is passion and apparently $50. :)

Thanks again for the mention and we'll be here for you if you need anything else! I want to thank you most of all for YOUR contributions on the site. They're much appreciated and I'm glad that you didn't buy a Sony! :)

Sincerely,

Hmc40

Hi there - think you done the right thing with ordering HMC40 It`s a brilliant camera possibly better than some give credit for. It is very sharp so make sure you get the best out of it and let the subjects do the moving not the cam. Seriously, cam is well worth the effort of mounting on a good tripod conditions permitting. Must say though, OIS works very well believe it or not especailly with not too much zoom. Do not think low light performance is quite as poor as some will have you to believe as long as you know it`s limits. Have been quite pleasently surprised in fact. One thing for sure, plenty of help & tips from all in this forum from what I have seen so far. Think shooting format will be an interesting part - best to start from top settings than if you have a good reason to change then fine, go ahead - all part of the fun me thinks. Have said enough - enjoy :Drogar-Happy(DBG):
