Assignment: Odyssey

Filmmaker Jim Arthurs had a dream: just how many Odysseys could he put to work on a single shoot? He came up with the concept for "Assignment: Odyssey" as a visual demonstration of the versatility of the Odyssey7Q+ monitor/recorder. Eight unique and popular cameras systems (each with Odyssey7Q+s) ranging from inexpensive 4K mirrorless cameras up through high end systems such as the Sony F55 and ARRI ALEXA were deployed on a Convergent Design themed virtual set green screen shoot. Throughout the day, each camera was chosen for its particular strengths or features, while the Odyssey7Q+ was used to "common capture" to UHD Apple ProRes or a given camera’s unique RAW data stream.

It was a crazy fun shoot and a unique opportunity to "play" with great gear and work with great professional colleagues and friends. Had we not had up to four cameras cameras shooting at once, a single Odyssey7Q+ could have been simply moved from camera system to camera system, changing over from 4K ProRes to the various Raw formats as needed (Sony Raw, Canon Raw, and ArriRaw). I've had a peek behind the scenes of Odyssey development and can only say MANY COOL THINGS ARE COMING!!! It's a good time to be an Odyssey owner.

I'm happy to answer any questions, from the shoot day to the post and VFX, which was totally a one-man band sort of thing.

Regards,

Just curious (and probably uninformed) but why would you ever hook a 7Q up to a Arri?

Hi Chris, the answer is simple... so you can record the highest quality signal the Alexa outputs... ArriRaw. Early generations of the Alexa were from the factory capable of "greater-than-HD" recording, but you needed a very expensive add-on recorder/module to accomplish this.

Convergent Design originally had this functionality in the Gemini recorder, used by the Alexa on many, many feature films, and the same capabilities exist in the Odyssey7Q (and 7Q+) as one of the firmware upgrade modules. Besides, many Alexa's wound up in the hands of owner/operators, and the ArriRaw capabilities of the Gemini (and Odyssey) keep their camera current and competitive in much the same way that an FS700 owner got a significant "upgrade" when pairing their camera with the Odyssey.

Also, the Odyssey provides a very nice monitor of course... as welcome on an Alexa as any other camera. :)

I hope that helps,

Note that while most ALEXAs can record directly i Apple ProRes (it's technically an option, but I don't know anyone who didn't buy the option), the recording is either in HD or 2K. It is derived from the camera's native 2.8K, but that is not the resolution of the final recording. By recording in ARRIRAW the full resolution is captured and maintained.
