EVA1: Are you ugrading to, or buying the EVA1 ?

I wonder how many existing DVX200 or other Panasonic camera owners plan to upgrade to, or buy the EVA1 ?
It seems like the next logical step to upgrade from the DVX200, or a similar fixed lens camera, and to use the EVA1
in conjunction with the GH5 (another interchangeable camera with a similar look)
IMO Panasonic should be pushing this upgrade path or offering customers some incentives to do so.
Encouraging existing customers to upgrade and stay with the brand seems a lot easier than trying to win new customers.

If any existing DVX200 or other Panasonic camera owners are upgrading or
plan to buy the EVA1 it would be good to hear about your experiences.

Thanks

DVX, HVX, AF100, HG, GH5 owner/user here.

EVA-1 probably/maybe. TBD. I hope to. Just want to play first, and assess a bit better.

C200 recent owner here. I respect the EVA, but the C200 feature set works better for me. The internal RAW is something that, as someone who's used RED and Blackmagic cameras for the last few years, is hard to give up. The AF is the icing.

Between the 1Dc for stills and a b-cam and the C200, for the first time maybe ever I feel like I'm covered for the next few years in terms of camera bodies (I also have a BMPCC and a6300 backing those two up).

Thanks filmguy123 and Fahnon, If Panny can get thier marketing dept together and figure out a way of helping existing customers upgrade I think they will be on to a winner !
I own the DVX200 but am trying to figure out if the EVA1 is worth the upgrade and if I can justify the cost of it.
I need some Panny users to help me. I like what I see but need some persuading that I should stick with the Panasonic ecosystem and not move to the C200
or Sony.
I need some feedback from DVX200 users or people in my situation, planning on upgrading from a fixed len or DSLR set-up.
Thanks again.

Former DVX100A, HVX200, AF100, GH4 owner. Currently own the Blackmagic BMCC 2.5K and Micro Cinema Camera, as well as a 5D mk III with Magic Lantern. I pre-ordered the EVA1 the day it was revealed at CineGear on the promise it would deliver Varicam color science. B&H rep told me I'm first in the pre-order queue there. The ProAV clips that were released pretty much sold me on keeping my pre-order. They grade easily and beautifully. I'm sure I'll be very happy with it.

Former DVX100A, HVX200, HPX170, HPX300, GH4 owner and long time renter/shooter of the original tape Varicam as well as the 2700/3700. I defected to Canon with the C100 and C300 and recently purchased the C200 and I rent the C300 MKII often. Overall, I am happy with the C200, although it has some bugs and issues that should be fixed by Canon. Cinema RAW Light has yet to fulfill the promise of true RAW with it's limited adjustment parameters, it's really just shooting Prores 4:4:4:4 XQ with variable gamma and the C200 has several glitches in the firmware/navigation that need to be addressed. The CRL footage is great quality but shooting the past two weeks with the RED Weapon 6K has shown me what RAW with lots of post adjustment variables is like in comparison.

EVA 1 holds a lot of promise, I like the color science and the footprint is nice and small and I like nice and small cameras. The lack of DPAF, for my work, is a concern, I really use, need and rely on DPAF for a lot of my projects and dealing with manual focus and from what I have seen, so so single touch AF performance, is a concern. I also dislike having to shell out another $2k for a real EVF, I have been using the C200's EVF a lot and it's very good. The screen on the EVA 1 is small and the fonts on it are microscopic, other than the main navigation menu, which is great. But the overlays seem way too small, the arm that positions the LCD screen also seems fragile to me. The EVA 1 Codecs are already good and will just be getting better. EVA 1 is a hot camera but it all depends on how you shoot and for which types of projects and clients. But for me, really difficult to give up DPAF, I am constantly in nuclear sun outdoors where I would never even be able to see the EVA 1 screen, much less judge critical focus so I would have up my EVA 1 package to about $10k to add a good EVF, battery system that could support it, etc. I will definitely be renting it for some projects and will shoot it side by side with the C200 to see what end result I end up with and like better.

Sorry, I totally missed the "existing Panasonic owner" stipulation. If it helps any, I've owned the GH3, GH4, HMC150; and have taken delivery of two new dvx200's at the day job, which we just used extensively for a several-day gig.

Not an issue Fahnon! I'm just trying to get a handle on possible upgrades and
in the absence of a Panasonic upgrade program or incentive, I'm simply trying to
figure out the best combination for me.
Thanks for the reply.

I'm looking forward to seeing some DVX200 and GH5 users thoughts on the upgrade.
I'm suprised Panasonic hasn't goten a few owners who are planning on using this combination
to give some feedback ?
Just my 2 Cents.

GH5/DVX200 owner here, excited for the EVA1 release but it won't be on my purchase radar for the time being. I only own 2 EF lenses and the rest are native MFT and I do quite a few shoots that are 1 camera only due to budget / quick turnaround, hence the reason for the DVX200 and it's 13x zoom.

I had a GH4 and I still have my AF100. I have another production camera but I could use this EVA 1 for a lot of stuff I’m getting lately. I loved the AF100 - still use it.

I don't know if you had followed other EVA1 threads but the subject of C200 AF came up and some posters - they may or may not have been long time Canon DPAF C-series/70D/80D/5DMKIV/1D XII users - opined negatively on its performance, thereby tilting the purchasing debate toward EVA1. Canon forums, as you know, generally hold it in a much higher esteem.

Previous owner of (2) AG-DVC200's, GH3, GH4, and now the GH5. I will certainly buy an EVA1, but will wait until sometime next year to purchase it.

HMC150, GH2, BMPC4K and BMPCC. Have it on pre-order. Still trying to find reasons to cancel it. Might save more and get the Varicam LT but the camera is heavy unlike the EVA1.

FS700, BMD Pocket, SR3 owner. Just bought an EVA yesterday. Shipping today (hopefully). I’m upgrading purely for the colour science. Sony colour science on the FS series is terrible. C200 doesn’t interest me, Raw light seems like too much data for too little benefit, and i’venever used AF in a professional context (not my style of work).

I pre-ordered as soon as they said it had the Varicam colour science. The main things I’m worried about is the 240fpsas it seems to be noisy (need to test) and is only 8 bit 420 (hoping for Raw Out). Icing on the cake was EIS, that looks amazing and is something I would use!

Sold my GH4, Canon c300 and C100 Mk2 and hopefully getting my EVA this week.

I still have my C300 MK2 and GH5 as well.

Been a long time Canon buyer but have lost interest in their recent offerings.

Not a fan of Sony cameras, so only real option for me is the EVA as I need something lighter with higher FPS.

Not too many DVX200 or Panasonic fixed lens owners seem to be rushing out to buy the
EVA1. I guess the competition is steep and the C200 looks like it could be it's main rival.
As a DVX200 owner I'm really on the fence about the value of the upgrade.
It seem like the EVA1 / GH5 combination could be a great A and B camera for my needs but
I'll wait a bit longer to see how existing Panny customers fare with it.
Thanks.

I'm strictly going off of my own experience as far as DPAF. If used correctly, it has worked very well for me. I shot a piece with multiple sets of dancers on a white on white BG and the DPAF did an amazing job tracking frantically moving dancers in a very difficult situation that even an A-list AC would have had problems keeping up with. Sure, it's not perfect but overall, it's pretty good. I've had a few issues with certain faces with bangs, glasses and hats but I would say 90% of the time, it works very well and my images stay in sharp focus.

Hi Puredrifting,

I'm one of the people who brought up the C200 in the other thread.

Have you had any experience with the 5D IV or 1 DX II? Someone else said the DPAF on those is far superior to the C200's, and this feature is what I really need. Any insight you have on this comparison would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Of course not, but it is one of the main differentiating features between two competing cameras. For me, if the EVA had a similar AF capability, I'd buy that instead of the C200. I already own a GH5, and like Panasonic's way of doing business, i.e., not drastically feature-disabling their products to protect some arbitrary delineation.

Also, I'm hoping this sort of feedback is valuable to Panasonic.

Lastly, it is a forum for discussion. None of us live or work on an island of just one brand. We all use various cameras and tools.

All that said, I'll be more considerate in trying to keep discussions to the posted topic :)
