EVA1: Are you ugrading to, or buying the EVA1 ?

There's nothing that competes with the FS7 three years after its release. Every time I shoot with it I get good looking footage with little effort in post to make it look great so I'm one happy user. The FS7 mkII on the other hand is just to pricey but the first FS7 is unbeatable at that price.

Sure, the FS7 is a great tool and I will continue to use it. But not for everything. For example, the EVA1 is smaller and fits nice to different situations where the FS7 is not so easy to use. But that is up to every user.

Current HPX 170, GH3 and GH4 owner. I bought a GH5 and kept it for 27 days and could not make it work like I wanted on a gimbal underneath a drone, so I sent it back and ordered the EVA 1. It will be here Thursday morning. The sensor (IBIS) system on the GH5 would quiver occasionally with the IBIS system turned off. I was very nervous about that going in, but I hoped that it would lock itself down and play nice when turned off, but it wasn't meant to be.

I have the Canon 16-35mm F2.8 L ll and the Canon 24-105mm f4 USM for general stuff and I will get the WC PL mount kit as soon as it is available as we mostly fly PL mount primes. Once I have the PL mount I will try to get one of the Sigma 18-35mm T2 Cine Primes approved through the Senate Appropriations Committee, the wife. We use that lens on Alexa Minis quite often. It is a nice zoom lens for a drone.

The EVA1 seems like an almost no-brainer upgrade from my AF100, purchased in 2011, which still gets used frequently and produces very pleasing images if properly lit. I'm also a Canon shooter on the stills side and have a dozen or so EF mount lenses covering the full range from 10 to 500mm, so at least starting out, I'm well prepared for glass. Batteries and memory cards can be shared with my DVX200, so no problems there either. I'll probably wind up wanting some kind of servo zoom and a quality EVF eventually, but can live without them at first (budget is, of course, an issue).

Late to the thread, been out shooting a short with the EVA-1
I own an FS7 and it's primarily been a paper weight for the last 9 months. will be putting it up for sale when I list my Kinefinity Kinemax 6k.
I own and love my Varicam LT. Added the EVA-1 as a B cam for Varicam LT.
Kept the Sony for it's "news at 11 colours" (some run and gun doc work actual benefits from the "lack of sex" colours of the sony).
Here is the EVA-1 in short form: all the muscle of the FS7 and the Raw back in the form factor and size of the fs5.
Loads better color science and 10 bit 4.2.2 codec through and through (important if you have to deliver professional work to anything that isn't the web).
Time code and eventually raw for FREE (2 things that will cost you on the sonys) as a varicam Owner I can confirm Panasonic has never charged for any firmware updates. so the addition of 5.7K true raw is welcom.
While I'm on the subject, I'm impressed by canon marketing liberal use of RAW (but really we can thank R3D for that) as far as I'm concerned compressed RAW isn't RAW (there is a difference between RAW and compressed RAW, logarithmic RAW and Linear RAW) if you've shot anything on a codex raw recorder you know. So Yeah canons raw lite, is just another codec as far as I'm concerned. depending on what you do RAW is a selective use tool. So having a raw output I can record to an external recorder when the job calls for it is more beneficial than another new form of compression to deal with. I shot raw on my sony F5 and it was nice, I rented the R5 recorder for jobs that required it.
A usable 10 bit 4.2.2 day to day codec is more important than RAW (my opinion which most professions agree with so I'm not interested in entertaining arguments).
and anyone with the time to work with RAW on every shoot is probably better off with an ursa mini pro for that purpose.

AUTOFOCUS: I don't use it, don't own a single auto focus lens. I do love the fact that the EVA uses the focus box system from the varicam.

all in all based on what I've seen there seems to be the consensus that the EVA-1 delivers for the price point and we still don't have all the promised features yet. So if it's delivering without RAW or the 400mbps codec. I think when those features are added it leaves the competition in the dust.

I got the EVA as a Varicam B camera and it's exceeding my expectations. I also own a GH5. If I were a GH5 owner looking to upgrade I'd walk right to an EVA-1
also if you need a servo Zoom the dual base iso actual makes the canon servo zooms usable. Set the camera at 2500 base and shoot at 2000 of 1600 iso with the 18-80 F4 zoom.

How do I feel about the EVA-1 well I'm seriouly considering picking up a second body to have it permanently converted to PL mount by wooden camera so I have a b-camera that can use the exact same lenses as my Varicam LT on 2 camera shoots. I find the issue is more trying to find EF lenses that match my PL mount glass for the EVA-1. so far in my side by sides with the same lens the difference in the cameras isn't colour but When I push it you can see the Varicam has noticeably more dynamic range (i know Panasonic says 14+ but I've always felt the varicam is closer to 15+ stops), and there is some other "sauce" that the varicam has that I can't put my finger on that sets it apart from the EVA-1.
now EVA-1 compared to the fs7 (which i also own) easy win for the EVA-1.
coming from a GH-5, I'd say EVA-1 is an easy move. Pair it with one of the canon servo zooms if you are replacing a DVX200

Nice points. With the Wooden Camera PL mount, the EVA1 can be a serious consideration.

As for Panasonic never charging for firmware upgrades, they (Panny) did charge for the AF100 upgrade that gave 1080p60 recording to match the AF100A. So while Varicam upgrades have been free, there is no guarantee that Raw will be free, but it sounds so far, like it will be an included free upgrade. I think Panny learned a lesson on charging for the AF100 upgrade.
Cheers
