Archiving HVX clips that are 40-80GBs

We just shot a ton of footage with HVX-Firestore combination. Our workflow made use of a laptop and a Buffalo Terastation (RAID-5 array). At the end of each shoot, the 40-70 mins of HD footage was copied from the Firestore to the Buffalo, then backed up to another Buffalo for extra safety.

We also bought a little RAID-0 drive, but we had a problem I've seen before where writing large files through USB to an external drive occasionally causes the drive's FAT (indexing system) to get trashed... and this happened not to one but to BOTH of the RAID-0 drives. Made me nervous, but GetDataBack got the files back... and I will NEVER use a RAID-0 (on PC) as storage media again for that reason.

BTW, we are buying an SDLT drive for more permanent backup. Check Ebay, there are some incredible deals, and the drives are nearly indestructable, so you shouldn't have to worry about buying a used or reconditioned unit.

SDLT-- With the help of Dan Montgomery over at Imagine productions and Patrick Thomas at Quantum, I have and SDLT 600 A drive in my office for evaluation. I've got it up and running on my ethernet network ( it connects via GIG E) and have started testing it out for back up purposes. I have my hands in a few other things right now that are pressing, but I will be writing up my observations on using the unit once I can run a few tests with it.

Disclaimer: I work in a professional environment, like many others here and real archiving is something of concern to me as I am involved with some long term projects that need to be seriously archived.

Short archiving anecdote: In 1997 I shot a doc in Iceland, one of the characters in that doc was killed in a cave exploration accident in 2004. Discovery needed some footage of this fellow for another project they were doing and tracked us down. We were able to get some betacam tapes to play back half decently and supplied the required. There was a licensing fee involved in this as well since we owned the licensed material. Archiving.... IF you are doing your own projects, where you own the footage Archiving is really important, and I'm not talking about DVD's as an archiving medium.

So I'll be back in here with a SDLT 600A report once I get farther into it in the next week.
