Apple iSlate / iPad

Tablets need their own UI - which involves screen touch and other idioms - you don't touch your screen on a computer!

In fact the bullpen next door to my office is filled with illustrators who spend their days, every day, touching the screens of their computers to get their work done.

Sorry. Reality can be an inconvenient thing. Particularly where it trashes over-broad sweeping generalizations about how people use their equipment.

Carry on.

I said it before but I'll restate it. Apple doesn't just sell computers. They are also selling a user experience. This goes over the heads of many people who just focus on hardware. This is why the ipod and iphone are so popular. With the ipod and iphone they could design an interface from scratch without any pushback from users. It's probably why their desktops aren't as popular, becuase they are locked into what people expect out of a desktop computer and can't change things enough to change the experience, so they lose their product advantage. The ipad is confusing people (and may not be as popular) because it's bumping up against the expectations of what a laptop should be.

A big aspect to Windows 7 is the addition/integration of touchscreen support; I'm looking at a Lenovo W510 as my next laptop for many reasons, but one of them is because it has a Full HD, color-gamut-accurate, multitouch touchscreen LCD...

OK,

If my first design didn't tick your boxes what about this one:

Head ------> desk. Yes, I see you are still missing the point, and this is the perfect illustration of it. You mention Linux?? As if that's a refutation? IT IS NOT ABOUT WHICH COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM. It's not about Windows vs OS X, or Linux vs Sun! It is about a computer operating system vs a tablet operating system. Linux was developed for computers, not tablets. Tablets need their own UI - which involves screen touch and other idioms - you don't touch your screen on a computer! Linux?? Holy moly, talk about missing the point. But that's just it - there's a reason why certain people are perpetually caught by surprise when technology makes a transition... "whoa, like, what's new about an iPod, man - my Coby MP3 Marvel plays things just like the iPod". Zoooom - that' the sound of a point flying over someone's head. Linux! Lol!

Linux isn't one operating system. Google the word distro. People have customized it to work on dozens of computer classes.

That "Zooom" sound keeps ringing! Exactly. Take a look at the Windows Tablet Edition. It shares the same problems as Windows CE. What is the main rap against WinCE? It's that it's supposed to be a mobile small form factor OS - but instead, it brings the same windows idiom as in the full OS, only crippled. What you need is a new idiom specifically suited to the hardware. WinCE and Windows Tablet Edition fail at that. And both are dying.

If you think that Windows Tablet fails because it's based on the desktop version, surely you believe that the iPad will fail since it's based on the iPhone OS? Same concept, just ones based on something that's too big, the other on something that's too small.

the iPad is just in the first stages. Too primitive for my personal purposes, but I can see the potential down the road.

OK, so we agree. The iPad is too primitive and basic. What are we debating again? lol

Anything could happen further down the road. :D

The iPhone is a computer, Tablets are computers, desktops are computers, heck, my car is practically a computer. When you said (asterisks mine):

Because they simply took the OS - Windows - and wrenched it, grafted it, frankensteined it, crowbared it onto a tablet device... which is wrong, and unsuited. The OS was not written to be used on a tablet, but on a ***computer***. It therefore fails dramatically in usability.

It threw me until I realized you weren't talking about computers, rather you were specifically referring to desktop computers. But that's just ad hominem.

A computer [assuming you mean desktop here :P ] UI is suited to computers. It is not suited to operating a tablet, baking bread, or digging ditches. You need a different tool for the job - a tool suited to the job. It would be idiotic to have a tablet work exactly like a computer, or try to use a laptop to dig a ditch. Still missing the point! Computer does NOT equal Tablet. Therefore Computer OS must not equal Tablet OS.

And an iPad should not run a similar OS to the iPhone. Again, why are we debating this? We seem to agree on most points.

Zooom! But it doesn't claim to do the same things. A smart phone is not a computer in your shirt pocket. A tablet is not a computer in your overcoat huge pocket. They are discreet devices.

I think the source of your befuddlement and confusion is here: you confuse "replace some functions of the computer" with "duplicate the same functions of a computer".

I guess we can agree to disagree on that point. I see the whole point of having email access on my phone is so I don't have to go running to my desktop or laptop everytime I want to check it, in which case it IS replacing.

Again the same semi-valid point. Yes, the iPad will need to go a lot further to match the UI to its form factor. It has just started - my point - but has a lot further to go. But I see it as the first step on the journey - you don't realize there's a journey at all. Zooom!

OK, the "zoom" sounds are getting annoying and immature. Debating is done with counter-evidence and logic, not sound effects and taunts.

I do realize there's a journey, in fact I pointed out several times how that journey has been ongoing for almost a decade now. Thanks and goodbye, I'm sick of this.

^ that's interesting...by law in Germany they're the only people permitted to use the term 'smartbook...'
