Pain in the ass
I'm probably not getting the iPhone 4, but I gotta say the os4 upgrade sure has made my old 3g mighty snappy. It's like a whole new phone.

I was seriously, seriously looking at getting one when my current contract is up next month, but I can wait.
I am probably late to the party, but I've been looking into the iPhone 4 more and more...
Interesting developments in the iPhone 4's antenna. Apple reported that there was a "software bug" that caused it to report that it had more bars' signal than it actually did. The veracity of this is called into question when they immediately posted a "help wanted" ad, advertising for antenna engineers! Then Consumer Reports comes out with a review saying that they cannot recommend the device due to reception problems, in effect verifying everything users are reporting and refuting Apple's claim of a software fix forthcoming (and, refuting Steve Jobs's statement saying "there are no reception issues.") However, they say that the temporary fix is as simple as sticking a piece of duct tape on the phone to cover the antenna's gap! (they also suggest that perhaps a phone case might be enough to alleviate the problem).
Apple says there is no problem, but the same day they made that statement they put out an ad to hire 8 antenna engineers... they say that if you're having reception problems, it's not because there's anything wrong with the phone, it's "because you're in an area with low signal, and you just thought you had decent signal because our signal-reporting software was buggy." Consumer Reports say that's nonsense -- they took the phone into a controlled test chamber with their own signal generator, thus ensuring absolute stability in the signal, and if they held the phone one way, they got great reception, and if they held the phone a different way, they got lousy reception. Obviously, there is a hardware design issue.
Gizmodo has started a petition demanding that Apple either fix the problem for real (not the fake "software fix") or give out free cases to those who are affected by the issue.
For those who have made the plunge and are experiencing issues, stay on top of it and see if there's a hardware fix implemented (and consider the duct tape workaround). For those who haven't made the plunge, it might be worth waiting a little while to see how this gets resolved. I was seriously, seriously looking at getting one when my current contract is up next month, but I can wait.
Was very interested in the Evo, especially because I live in a 4G city already. But the video camera is reported to be horrible, and the iPhone 4's is reportedly pretty good. Plus my wife's phone is an iPhone, so I could add on to the plan, hopefully making it reasonably affordable. No HTC Evo?
I've had to go to Sprint a couple times the past few days (to resolve issues with my Palm Pre) and I've played with it a bit. Cool phone. Huge screen. But, without real world use of that phone, I'd be hesitant to pull the trigger. Which is why I'm curious as to what others think about that phone.
I personally have no real problems with this, and I've been using it for about three and a half weeks.

Meh, I'll probably just revisit the whole thing a month or two from now when the contract is up -- because the way phones are changing, there'll be six new models that are all "better" than today's offerings anyway!![]()
