DVX, XL1, XH-A1, or XL2?

thanks so much,

personally i just dont like widescreen, I cant stand looking at half a screen sometimes

Is there anyone else who does not like widescreen?

Well, my mum HATED widescreen until we got a widescreen TV. Then the mere fact that it fills the screen nicely worked well for her. I always liked the look and I think widescreen movies look fantastic on my DLP. It all depends on what you're looking at it on. If you're looking for personal use, that's fine...but if you're going to have clients, expect them to want at least a widescreen deliverable option.

thanks so much, yeah I might have clients so i have to put my flavor aside possibly and go with the widescreen or at least have the potential to film in it

I tell ya, I really appreciate the responses and the information is invaluable

After lots of messing around with the HV20, if you have the budget of $3000 get an A1 and start filming, FCP can now deal with the 24F natively, and your good untill you need a RED One or something much bigger and expensive. Personally I would save and get something like the EX1 ore the HVX, both amazing cams...

Jon

24f=canons HD camers
24p= everything else

Dont get an EX1, all you need to do is read Barry's wirte up of it (actually in the HVX forum) to know why. It is sharper then the HVX but everything else is WAY shittasticle.

Hvx, XH A1 or DVX for sure.

Can final cut express handle 24f?

Final cut express can edit your 24p (or, Canon's 24f) but only on a 29.97 timeline (not a native 24p timeline, well, technically a 23.98 timeline). However, to get the most out of 24p and a "film look" or "cinema look" you want to edit in Final Cut Pro and on a 23.98 timeline.

I used to edit on FCE and cut my 24p footage in it. It still came out looking alright. It's just when you have a native 23.98 timeline your file sizes are 20% smaller as well as having a smoother workflow.

As for the difference between 24p & 24f....well, there are LOTS of posts on this site about that.....do a search.

Dory, thanks for pointing that out, I can see where he is coming from with some of his points, but having used the EX1, I have to say, it is a pretty sweet camera.

It's been said many times before, but I reiterate. If your going to go Final Cut bypass FCE and go straight to FCP. Save yourself some money and time.
I originally upgraded only for 23.98 and multi-cam but after playing around with the other programs in the suite I soon realized what my creative possibilites could be.
It took me to a higher ground. Now I just have to learn it. :laugh:

I have compared the XH-A1's image to the HVX, and the XH-A1's image looks flat and dull. I like the XH-A1, but do you guys think that the image dull?

That's the beauty of all those manual controls they put on these cameras. You can make it look however you want with a little practice and some patients. Otherwise it's just another point-and-shoot box.......

I would only go XL2 if there was less plastic on it the bastard, and if the manuel zoom lens came on the camera stock. That "electroniocally assisted" zoom that comes stock on it is so painful to use. Those two canon hd cams you mentions do not put out progressive footage. It's called 24f because it's 24 interlaced frames, that is canon's way of trying to cover that up with 24 tossed infront of it.

Go DVX, but what would you expect in this forum?

I love the XH-A1 and the DVX. I want the XH-A1 because it is a newer camera. I do like the 24p on the DVX. I think that the XL2 can actually records in 24p, but the XH-A1 records in 24f.

I'm pretty sure it's been said by reputable sources on this board that the XH-A1's 24f, at least, is just as 24frames-per-second progressive as the DVX's; not sure about the XL2. Canon calls their progressive mode "Frame" mode, which is why they call it 24f rather than 24p.

The Xl2 will shoot 24 fps, with flags, at least thats what I remember, wheres berry when you need him? I have sen some fantastic stuff from the XH a1, but same goes for the DVX.... If I was buying now and couldn't wait till Fall for the HMC, I would go with the A1 because it is such an all around solid camera.

Ok i was originally going to buy the DVX100B but now after reading this form im wondering if i should just get the HD version of it(HMC150) or do you think that i should just wait until it comes out and then get the DVX100B because there might be a price drop...what do you think

I agree with the "Get a DVX and start making movies." Personally I would get either a new or used dvx100b. I would not get a dvx100a because of all of the improvements to the dvx100b over the a. As far as the dvx in general though, I would say definitely get it and use the other money that you saved over the canons to get other necessary items (audio, lighting, etc.)

Oh and as far as waiting for a dvx100b price drop because of the new panasonic, there already was one a week or two ago. B&H photo video just dropped it $100 so it is now at $2500.

I disagree with the "Get a DVX and start making movies." Using new prices from B&H you are looking at a $900 price difference between the 100b and the Canon A1. If you look at this from an investment standpoint, IMO, the HDV camera will hold it value better than the SD cam. So at the end of the day, if you figure in resale value, the real price difference is not that much. Not to mention the better picture quality of the A1. However, to me, the more important decision maker would be Panasonic's discontinuation of replacement parts. I have a DVX with only 100 hours that is useless because I can't get the parts to fix it.
