Hey,

Umm..yeah i guess the title is kinda self explanatory. I was wondering if there's anyway i could record straight to an external and if there are any drawbacks from it.

No. You can offload P2 cards to Firewire drives, or you can use a DTE recorder like a Focus Enhancements FS-100 ("Firestore"). A plain Firewire drive doesn't have the smarts to understand a DVCProHD stream.

And when an external drive is attached to that laptop, you can record to that drive.

You can also record straight to a Firewire drive that is powered separately, but you have to format it using the camera, in "1394 Host" mode, and you're limited to a certain number of partitions. I haven't done it, so you need to do a search to find the details, or read the manual.

No you cannot. You can offload P2 cards to an SBP2-compliant Firewire drive, but you can't record to the drive in lieu of P2 cards.

Thanks for the correction THoff, that's what I was meaning, but didn't say it correctly. I thought your original post was implying an intermediate PC.

i can record directly to my mac book pro with final cut studio in hd? i.e. no need in a p2 card?
