curious how solid of a lens it is...looking for a good versatile piece of glass, but don't want to spend the loot for an L lens. anyone??

figured.. thanks. i'm a fan of Tokina products. still eyeing the 11-16mm....one day!

100% Honest I think the Tokina 11-16mm is a good lens but not worth the price of admission. It's actually a little soft and that was a disappointment for me when I use it. Till this day one of my favorite lenses I have used is a 14mm Canon, just love the way it looks.

wow! $2000. that better make my coffee every morning too! ;)

There's an excellent review of this lens on

www.photozone.de

Basically, they said that Mechanically, the lens is really good; but optically the Tamron 17-50 (non-VC) and the Canon 17-55 (which also has great mechanics) are better

I own the lens so going now by experience with it. Like it a lot. I've heard the opposite from threads to what gene_can_sing said. Lot of people who use it will say it's pretty darn sharp.

When you say the Canon 17-55 are you talking about the 2.8 IS version or the 3.5-5.6 version?

Why even compare? For the price the Tokina 11-16mm is great.
Anything like the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS is in a different price range. Also there is a difference between the 11-16mm in focal length obviously.... then the 17mm focal length of the 17-50 Tamron or the Canon 17-55, so why would you even compare them for his question?

Interesting because I have used the 11-16 (rented on almost all my shoots) and am awestruck by the sharpness...perhaps your particular lens had some issues.

My experience is quite the opposite of life4eva. Sold my first unit (for cash reasons, not technical).. bought another 11-16 2 months later. The Tokina is sharp; I can only think that one may have received a bum unit if they experienced otherwise.

To put it another way: Duclos sells a cine-modded 11-16 for 3.5K... that's always backordered. Lot of cash and trouble to go through for a "good" lens.

To each his/her own.

I own both the Tokina 11-16 and 16-50 and feel they are both extremely sharp, both on the 7D and in tests on the AF100, for which I am awaiting the release of the Birger mount. The constant 2.8 is a plus, though the only negative I see is the extent to which the 16-50 physically extends as it approaches 50mm. I wouldn't trade either.

Nice shot, very smooth all around. Which lens was used, timer etc, also how did you rig up the zoom?
The Timelapse was actually with the 11-16. Used an inexpensive 'made in China' timer on e-Bay. Shot the originals @ 2592x1728 and created the h.264 in FCP and used Motion to create the artificial zoom.

one more thing (lens) ... how about the Tokina 16.5-135MM F/3.5-5.6 DX ??
not a whole lot of reviews on B&H.

i know it's more of a versatile lens, but anyone have good/bad experience with it?
and how about using this for video...will it yield solid results?

I was talking about the expensive Canon 17-55 f2.8 and not the kit lens. That is a fantastic lens, but yes... expensive at over 1K. The Tokina is probably fine and like $500 cheaper. The Tamron Non-VC has good IQ, but the mechanics are terrible. Really, really short focus throw (45 degrees) and focus ring is really loose.

I have the Tokina 11-16 and the mechanics are excellent (Short-ish focus throw - 90 degrees), so I would image the 16-50 Tokina would be good in that dept. also.

Here's a good review of both the Canon and the Tokina
