C100: Anyone hear when Atomos is going to release the HDR upgrade for the Ninja Blade?

So far, everything that was put out pre-NAB and NAB pointed to "May". It's May, any word on when we can try this new upgrade out? I combed the Atomos site and forums, not much out there on it.

They didn't say which year...

Too many promises on previous products, which they haven't delivered on, to believe them anymore.

Which is kinda sad, as they used to be good.

That's too bad. I hope they come through with it. I have to say my Blade is probably the best piece of production gear that I have bought in at least a few years. It is simple, works great and is fun to use.

Probably, but I know a lot of C100 owners shoot with the Blade and there is a lot more activity in this thread.

They tell you how ... but it's a marginal upgrade (not really HDR per se).

BTW, in the old, old days, there was a high end TV manufacturer from Hong Kong that sold their gear under a Proton moniker. They'd take a regular off-the-shelf Hitachi tube (in 27" and 31" sizes), upgrade it to a much more potent power supply, increase the maximum brightness levels and, at the same time, apply a darker tint to their screens. As the result, their blacks looked the blackest of any mass produced TV line. They priced their line to about double of Sony's. In the higher end stores, people went for it but poor quality control let Proton down. Their sets burned out too quickly and, eventually, the high end market went to the RPTV's anyway.

DLD, you are giving me flashbacks. I was a Video Department manager at Circuit City in the 1980s, we sold the crap out of those Proton sets. In real life, they didn't look any better than the Sony XBRs to me but they were something different so we sold quite a few.

Whereabouts?

I never worked for CC but do have a NSFW story about my experience of trying to get hired there in the early 90's.

Oh, do tell.

You can't just dangle that carrot (God please tell me this doesn't involve dangling carrots).

Well, I went in for an interview in a West LA CC store. Nothing special, very few questions asked. The lady in charge then told me that I'd have to take a medical test at a clinic in Venice Beach. So, a day or so after, I arrive for my appointment and realize it's a "free" clinic. A lot of people going in and out. The first thing they naturally tell you is to pee in a cup (I missed... but that isn't the NSFW part). Then, the presiding nurse took the cup and told me to go into a room and wait for a doctor there. And so I did. A typical doctor examination area. A table, a few chairs. Definitely nothing ostentatious. And so I wait for a few minutes. The doctor is late. I wait a few more, then a few more. It goes on a while. No one is coming. So, I begin to look around and the accoutrements there were so sparse, the only thing worthy of attention was a box full of surgical latex gloves. I think there were 100 of them packed in there. So, I looked at it and looked at it and no one was around and I thought, "What the heck. The box is already opened. It's not like anyone will miss one freaking glove. Let me see what it feels like". Maybe I thought of that Howie Mandel bit when he would put it over his head and try to blow it up. But I wasn't Howie Mandel. So, I pulled one out and slid my right hand into it. It stretches. It fits. I have fairly small hands anyway. No big deal. But, as I begin to flex my hand to see how it responds, the door opened and the doctor entered the room. And, for some reason, he immediately noticed that I was wearing one of his gloves. Then he looked at me and asked, "What are you doing with that glove?". I looked back, shrugged my shoulders and replied, "Practicing safe sex".

Needless to add that I never got to the second interview. My career at Circuit City was not meant to be.

Northridge, Santa Barbara and Ventura although I was only a video manager in the Santa Barbara store, I was an audio manager, then a store manager at Northridge, then Ventura, respectively.
