I've never been but I've seen both his videos about the 5d and 7d. Those videos show a lot of good info but what more can you learn at these events?

We all learn so much on these threads so how valuable is it to go to these Philip Bloom shows?

Has anyone been?

Nope, nor would I spend the money on this even if I were new to using a dslr. Im sure Plilip will be a great speaker, and share lots of tips and tricks for using these. but I would rather spend the money on a tool or even a steak dinner, before I would spend money on this. As you said above, unless your lazy, computerless, or just plain stupid, there's no reason you can't educate your self on the subject right here on dvx user. In fact the only problem I have found here is information overload. there's so much useful info it can be overwhelming at times

I went to one about a month ago, there's some good info in there and I did pick a couple tips but I did already know most of what he was talking about.
Was nice to meet a few other local DSLR shooters and Philip Bloom himself is a really nice and funny guy. Got a nice goodie bag from Rode too, I felt the admission price was fair enough. The $50 for parking nearly made me vomit in rage though.

It's not necessary for most people on these boards, but a nice event none the less,

50$! Was there a choice of parking somewhere else or was that parking from the people that ran the Bloom event? or where they not associated with it? That's crazy! I would have went home or parked anywhere else.

Had nothing to do with the Bloom event, Brisbane was severely flooded about 3 weeks before. The event was held in a building right on the river and subsequently half the underground parking structures were damaged in the floods. Thus the remaining parking places doubled their prices, didn't even think to look at the price board. Usually $20 max.

I'll be at his Seattle event. sometimes you pick up things live you wouldn't have come upon. I'll let u know what I thought.

I went to a meetup with Philip Bloom, and the best thing about these meetups is that you get to meet many other DSLR-video enthusiasts (some carrying the craziest DSLR-rig constructions). Just from meeting up with others you can learn a lot, try out new gear and generally get new ideas for your own projects.

And I agree with Outlaws: Philip Bloom's a nice and funny guy. Good drinking-company too ;)

That's a crazy rig! Cool about meeting up with people. In all reality there are events on DVXuser such as festivals we can go to, to meet up with people that use DSLRs. I was at Westfest last year in LA and there were a bunch of cool people. And it didn't cost a piece of gear.

What the hell is that viewfinder on the Canon? I need a 3D image of this to pan around these two guys.. who has some glasses? Looks like a crazy Sony EX3 viewfinder attachment?????

It's the viewfinder from an older shoulder-camera (anyone recognize which model?) which he had bought second-hand specifically for this purpose. I looked through it: the image is black and white.

He built a wooden frame around it to be able to carry it on his shoulder, and even managed to incorporate the juicedlink and some selfmade electrical switches. It's the most sympathetic rig I've seen so far ;)
