Anyone editing with USB 3.0?

USB is the most widely used standard, reliability is only an issue in the parts you're using, buy a quality external drive and plug it in to a quality computer, and reliability will be very high. as for speed, it's on par with SATA in terms of overall throughput. there are numerous other considerations for its detailed performance, but suffice it to say you can consider USB 3 a very very good option

Ya I heard speeds can get lower, but it is still around Sata speeds. They do have to use eSata raids when using programs like smoke, so I figured a 7200rpm external USB 3.0 on a really good laptop would run no problems.

I have a bunch of 3TB USB 3.0 drives and they work great with my Toshiba laptop. A big improvement over USB 2 and FW400 and 800. Transfer speeds are very eSATA-like.

In the neighborhood of 2200 Euros.
Not too shabby, when you think that the cheapest 17" MacBook Pro comes for 2499 Euros.
And that is not even close to the specs of my mobile suite.

I agree postmaster, that's some pretty great bang for buck.
I'm no pro editor but I'm learning/training to be so I doubt I'd need that type of set yet lol
Thanks for sharing!

I made a mobile editing suite/DIT station based on USB3 and it works like a charm.

The laptop and the RAID drives also have eSata, that should - at least on paper - be faster, but I get more performance out of them, if I plug them in as USB3.

Quadcore i7-2670QM/ Nvidia 2GB GT 555M
The drives in the RAID boxes are normal 7200rpm (forgot the brand but ether Baracudas or Samsung)

I'm happy with usb 3.0 but my drive needs to wake up every so often, esata, doesn't.

There are various energy saving settings that you can tweak to make your drives stay spinning.
Also, for the Mac... and I think PC there is a handy little utility called "Disksomnia" that'll - poke - all your connected drives to make sure they are awake.

I dont know if there is a PC version, but im sure there are similar things available.
