Anyone Decided on a Mic for the AF100?

And what about using Sennheiser G2 wireless systems with this camera? Will these present any problems?

And BTW the MKE66 is -66dB and would be great. Set your input value at -60dB.

Best,

Jan

Jan, I'm probably being dense but where does that number come from? The ME66/K6 is listed on Sennheiser's site as having a sensitivity of 50 mV/Pa which according to the conversion at http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-transferfactor.htm gives sensitivity -26 dB re 1 V/Pa. -66 dB would be 0.5 mV/Pa.

That matches my experience with the DVX100 which definitely needed a 30 dB pad for safety with the ME66.

Just posted about this in another thread sorry... but do you know the figure for the maximum input voltage before distortion on the AF101? Tomlinson Holman quoted 48 mV in his book for the DVX100, leading to the need for a -30dB pad on the ME66, which certainly fitted with my experience. I've stuck with that in the absence of a figure for the HVX200 (and not owning a tone generator to measure it myself).

If my understanding is correct, this is the number I really need to know to figure out safe and correct pad for the system- is that right? I can figure out the maximum microphone output from its quoted sensitivity in mV/Pa and and its max sound pressure level, compare that with the max voltage the input can take, and pad it so that a maximum signal from the microphone just stops short of causing distortion.

Bit confused now... sorry! Any help appreciated!

Cheers, Hywel

Hi,

digital audio has no headroom, so over 0 is going to distortion. So starting at -20 and 0 is your sweet spot.

I got the -66 from the operations manual for the MKE66. My bad though, I looked up an MKE66, different animal altogether. But the spec on the ME 66 is showing mv/PA which is a different measurement and yes using the equation on the page you point out does show that the ME66 is a hot microphone and it too could be helped by the same pad that I proposed for Steve.

Hope that clears confusion.

Best,

Jan

Ah, that would explain it, thanks Jan!

Just like to say how much I appreciate the time you spend reading and replying to posts here. It is way above and beyond the call of duty. The openness and constructiveness of your posts is appreciated too and it certainly makes deciding to go back to Panasonic after the purgatory of Canon dSLR shooting a very easy choice. I'm really looking forward to the arrival of my AF101 and shooting fab footage with it!

Cheers, Hywel.

I think the Shure pad is too long to use in an ENG configuration mounted to the mic or sticking out from the camera. It's okay for handheld mics and lavaliers though. I may look at the specs on the Rodes to see if they match. Thanks Jan.

Edit: The Rode NTG-1 is -36 dB

Well I even looked at the Sony site and all the ECM-6* series shotguns are in the -30db range. Here's the challenge then. Who can be first (?) to find a suitable third-party quality shortgun mic with:

  • XLR connector
  • -50/-60db sensitivity
  • is under $300
  • phantom power
or is Panasonic going to have to release a revised version of its MC200G? Jan?

This is at -60db but all the other specs ar wrong.. (and its for spy-es)

This looks good.. (for surveillance)

This is good :)

What everybody probably wants.. (for 117 dollars): http://stores.sacelec.com/sacramentoelectronics/detail.jsp?name=CALRAD10-14

The -50/-60-microphones are bult to listen up to 100 meters away..
Did Panasonic do a huge mistake by not implementing the -36db broadcast microphone standard signal in the AF100??

If it is a mistake, then its scary :( is it firmware correctable??

I have an Oktava MK012 hypercardioid with the -10db pad. I've never tried it mounted on a camera before. Does anyone have any experience with trying that hypercardioid mic on a camera and have an opinion about it?

Thanks Yak, but we're looking for a an insensitive mic in the -50db range that will match the specs of the AF100. That CS-1 is -30db and the CMS-10 is -26db in stereo and -30db in mono. Unfortunately, at this point we've yet to come up with a quality mic that will match the AF's specs without having to attenuate it, like we'd have to do with those Sankens. In fact, at this point I'm unsure of the sensitivity of even the MIC150.

sorry I missed that point I have been using them on a HVX 200 with no problem and I did not notice that there appears to be a sensitivity issue with the AF 100 bummer! I would expect Sony to have a sound issue on there low end "Pro camera" not Panasonic.
