Anyone compare the Canon 28m f/1.8 and the Sigman 30mm f/1.4

As the title states has anyone compared these two lenses or have a lot of experience with either one? Their similar prices are inviting the comparison, because if they weren't close I think I would go with the Canon.

Specifically I want to know what they are like WFO. I am less concerned about the focal length and stop discrepancy but if one is usable wide open and the other isn't that is important to me. Also, build quality comparable?

I'm aware of the plethora of zooms out there covering this range but they are to slow. I use my 7D equally for stills and video and want something fast for the former. And the cheaper Canon 35mm f/2 isn't wide enough. I was looking at the 24mm f/1.4 L but even the original version used is a little more then I want to drop right now.

Anyone? Thanks!

I just heard about it here not so long ago. Not perfect, but pretty cool. I just bought the 28mm f/1.8 so I can shoot wide open. I haven't gotten it yet but I hope I like it!

I've had the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for about half a year. It's not my favorite but it is the fastest lens I own and so it is useful to me. I'm just not crazy about the IQ. That being said, on occasion I am pleasantly surprised. I guess I've got mixed feelings about it. I've considered stepping up to the Canon 35mm f/1.4L but I'm not convinced the price difference will be worth it to me.

You may find it helpful to rent the two lenses you're comparing.

Ken Rockwell LOVES the Canon 28 1.8 and dislikes the sigma 30 1.4. He is mainly discussing stills, but still valid if you shoot stills too. Biggest difference I see is that the Sigma is APS-C only and the Canon is full frame. Also Sigma has some QC issues. I bought the Sigm 50 1.4 and it front focused, exchanged it for another copy and that also front focused. After that experience I returned the second lens for a refund. I think I will stick with Canon.

I forgot that the Sigma was APS-C but one of the reasons I picked the canon for my camera for future use on a fullframe camera. Good point.

I bought a 30mm Sigma and returned it =/ It just looked way to soft for me.. Guess I had a bad copy.

Appreciate the info guys. It kind of reaffirms what I have been reading and seeing for a couple weeks now.

Think I'll hit up the Canon.
