so i'm using an hvx this weekend for a video shoot and i just got a 1ghz ibook w/ 640mb of ram. haven't tried using it with FCP yet to dump the p2s with. anybody using one just for dumping?
i'm well aware that editing won't happen, just want to dump contents...i won't have the hvx to test it with until the night before the shoot, so i was just wondering if i may have any serious issues...

I've used a G3 iBook to just transfer files from the cards in their native format to an external drive... I converted the mxf's to Qt mov's via FCP once I got back to my desktop system.

My concern is that iBook HDD may not be fast enough to cover the throughput for what you are capturing.

You'd have to go internal, and it may be a 4200 rpm 2.5-inch HDD.

My 1.33 GHz iBook has no cardbus slot (although I have a Powerbook that does). How are you using P2 with it? With a Duel adapter?

Okay, I'm confusing.

Are you capturing to the iBook via FCP?

Or are you doing something else?

Because that iBook has just one FW port, and I don't believe it is a FW400.

Are you daisy chaining the cam to the drive to the iBook?

If doing this becomes a problem you can always eliminate the computer and just use the camera in host mode to transfer to the firewire hard drive as long as it's not bus powered.

i was planning on going cam hooked to firewire drive hooked to ibook.
i assumed that would work. guess i'll find out!

I'm telling you it will work. I've done it before with a 867MHz 12" PowerBook which is a lower spec than your iBook.

I did exactly what you want to do. Plugged the external HDD into PowerBook firewire then plugged the camera's firewire into the second firewire port on the external HDD. Then imported the footage with FCP 5. Worked just fine.

Best of luck on daisy chaining cam to back up FW HDD to iBook.

If this is mission critical work with no backup, it wouldn't be my first election.

I like this thread as I have an old G3 ibook and have wondered whether I could use it to dump p2 footage onto.

I've used a G3 iBook to just transfer files from the cards in their native format to an external drive... I converted the mxf's to Qt mov's via FCP once I got back to my desktop system.

This is exactly what I'd like to use my ibook for. So can I dump 8gb p2 footage onto the ibook via a dual adapter and then transfer the files onto an external drive? The G3 only has 500MHz and 128mb of ram--it's old.

If doing this becomes a problem you can always eliminate the computer and just use the camera in host mode to transfer to the firewire hard drive as long as it's not bus powered.

Using this option, how long would it take to transfer 8gb p2 files to, say a 120gb Lacie Little Disk?
