1DC: Any way to play 1D C footage smoothly?

Thank you, downloading now. I once converted your files with the free tool "Hybrid" to ProRes, but I could not chose a bitrate, they then were only around 100 Megabits from originally 504 Megabits.

Update: I just watched the ProRes files, they play with no problems, smoothly. Great shots! Where did you film that, and with what lenses?

The reason you can play the converted prores is because it is only 100megabits, Andree give you the 500megabit prores file your CPU/display card may have a problem playing

I meant Andree's files. They play smoothly, even at over 500 Megabit. And they should, considering my rig.

Normally, if converted to ProRes, the bitrate of 500Mbit (62.5MB/s) isn't a problem for any hard drive.

It's the codec of mjpeg that isn't optimized. ProRes is fine.

Yes, your ProRes plays fine, thanks again.

Something else I was wondering: How does your sound setup on the 1D C look like? Internal or external microphone? I hope the internal one is good enough, as I want to stay compact for documentary style shooting.

The internal mic on the 1Dc is for "scratch audio" only. It can be used to sync an external recording with the video based on the audio track.

But you can still record acceptable audio directly to the camera via a mic like Rode's Stero VideoMic Pro—which is what I use (they also have an older StereoMic and VideoMic Pro). The Stereo VideoMic Pro boosts the signal +20dB so that you can lower the internal amps of the camera. I use this mic for environment.

For talking heads I use the RodeLink Filmmaker Kit which is a great price/performance wireless setup. Both of these solutions record audio directly to the file via the 3.5mm plug.

As for the audio being scratch: I am quite satisfied with the quality of the audio I get from my small compact Canon (SX700 HS), but I never had a SLR with Video.

Brack.ch has both microphones you list at an affordable price. I also own an old, but like new microphone from Panasonic I got with my DVX100A if I remember correctly, the AG-MC100G. It is XLR Phantom powered I suppose, so an adapter for Mini-Jack won't do it, right? I found this closed auction for it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-A...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 But I don't have the camera mount anymore, if I should plan to sell it.

Well, all this discussion is moot as long as I don't get my hands on my own 1D C. I looked at other options: The XC10 from Canon has a fixed lens, no DCI 4K, a small one inch sensor and looks ugly; The URSA Mini 4K is either lousy described everywhere with a resolution of "4000" x 2160 pixels or is really that odd, has no included power and an unknown crop factor; The Production Camera 4K also from Blackmagic has terrible reviews, a crop of 1.7 or so, no DCI 4K. And all the other cameras either don't have an EF-Mount for my lens gear (24 1.4L II, 50 1.2L, 135 2.0L and 400 2.8L II IS) or only shoot UHD or below. And the C500 or C300 II are easily double the price of a 1D C and are made for rigged shooting; the C100 is for my intended run and gun one man shooting style but has no recorded 4K, only internal.

So it all comes down to the 1D C: A superb stills camera way ahead of my dated 5D Classic I bought in 2006, very usable if not even great video and a crop factor for DCI 4K of only 1.3. So I could leave my 5D at home and still shoot awesome clips and images.

My plan is to save up for two years and then see what the market has to offer; but the waiting is really hard, when you see new high-resolution video cameras being announced all the time.

@Pascal In your case I would probably wait until spring 2016 when the next 1Dx mkII and 5D mkIV comes along—if that is the form factor you are looking for.

It's funny you mention the XC-10. One of the most ridiculed and almost "hated" cameras for sure. Well, I picked one up yesterday. It was an 'open box' but otherwise new XC-10 for 1245 CHF (roughly same in USD).

With this camera, people tend to focus on what they DON'T get. What I see is:

  • 4k (UHD)
  • 322Mbit datarate, INTRA frame
  • 4:2:2
  • internal recording to current (next-gen) media—Cfast 2.0.
  • Auto focus
  • Canon Log
  • Wide DR
  • 5-axis IS that everybody loves
  • 27-270mm in video recording
  • adjustable, pretty big LCD
  • included loupe
  • built in ND
  • WiFi
  • 1080@60
  • Internal timelapse

With ALL of that, how can this camera be so controversial?

Yes, it's fixed lens and variable aperture. Yes, the sensor is 1" (which isn't inherently bad, by the way, depending on type of shooting). It will serve me as a B cam with Canon Log and 422, plus it will sit on my Ronin-M a lot of the time. I also think it will be great for family adventures.

I will probably do a write-up or video when I've tested it for a bit.

Yes, I'll try to get it done. After the turn of the year for sure, but I'll at least get some comparison clips up with a similar framing between the 1Dc and the XC-10.

There's quite a bit of improperly shot footage out there.

Didn't intent to get this camera, but at $1245 it's worth a closer look. The lens seems to be the weak spot. An updated version with a sharp 2.8 or 2.8-4.0 would be better (obviously).

you got a smashing price for the cam! paid 1900€ inkl VAT for it.
I use it as a B-Cam for my 1DC for around 5 months now.
Its great and timesaving on quick jobs (f.e. timelapse function with low shutter speeds directly to UHD 300mbit 25p file), the only real caveat I have with it is
the noise reduction algo over 2000 ISO. I hope they make an option to deselect that in a future firmware, but as the camera isnt selling well I dont think much
firmware improvment will happen (same as with the 1DC - shame on you Canon). But its a great 1DC B-Cam for daylight or lightend Jobs as it is now.
You cant get the colors to match 100%, but very near, cant see it if its a cut to a different angle or frame.

OH and dont forget to update the firmware, the new "less rolling shutter" option in 4k is working great!

It hasn't showed up yet, but let's hope so! =) It was an open-box, but unused. Plus, this is the european edition that doesn't include media and card reader. I'm not sure that is available in the US (in case people wonder why it's cheaper here).

Thanks for the firmware tip!

Slightly Off topic

Since we all of us first generation 1DC users are here, just wondering what firmware are you guys using now?

I just realise I am still on 1.3.5, Canon never announce it properly.

Merry Christmas and Happy new year every one!!!!!

The media for the xc will cost you a few thousand Euros?

=)

I picked up a 128GB Cfast 2.0 card for $235. The media is expensive compared to the camera, but it's the same cards I'll use for my next DSLR body. That way, it doesn't hurt that bad.

Nice deal, seems like Cfast card's price have gone down quite a lot in the last few months. I have ordered a 4.6K USRA-Mini in summer hope I will get it within Q1 2016, it will be nice if the CFast cards lower further.

By the way is your 1DC on 1.35/1.39 or other firmware. Thanks

Im on 1.4.0 as well. Its the newest, the camera was just in service a few weeks ago. No new features added only a bug fix.
Still no real update in years as in implementing what the 1DX 2+ firmware gave 1DX users (shame on you canon)...

To my feeling the only real update was the one giving us 25p. I real wonder what they think about this camera in japan, they still show it on every tradeshow (f.e. IBC 2015), they even produce new marketing material with it, but they dont seem to work on the firmware...

Saw 1.4.0 on canon RUmours ^^ and 1.3.5 do not suppose to have the 1DX AF upgrade in it? the 1.3.9 and 1.4.0 have that?

Canon do not inform us in HK, they might not even update it. I had great trouble getting it done

Plus they need me to wait at least 3 days which I hate.

They will probably say do not have a version 1.4.0 version

Same case as you they only have one engineer who can do the upgrade.

Read this thread, took me down memory lane. I really enjoyed this camera. Pretty close to perfect for me. I will keep hoping a 1080 raw update for you guys.

As much as I love this camera, from my exp. with CPS and canon reps at IBC, canon management has forgot about it pretty fast. It just didnt sell at all. I dont hope for any significant updates, would be a welcomed suprise though...
