any hope for improving 7D rolling shutter?

The fact that most people are content watching horribly stretched and scratched 35mm prints projected by bulbs that are about 3000 hours past their prime tells me that audiences care far less about image quality than us pixel peepers.

No scientific test? There's been more than one that, IMO, qualifies. The testers mounted the cameras on top of each other and matched FOV, I believe. That's the right way to do it.

Your definition of scientific is not mine.

Yes and those tests confirm what I've seen. That the rolling shutter is equally bad in both of them. The 7d is much better in 720p mode though concerning the shutter.

And I don't yet buy the idea that the 1d is significantly better. The same people said that the 7d is significantly better but I just don't see it and I've shot a couple of action oriented shorts with both. The only evidence is Nocturne and stu maschwitz but we don't yet know did they happen to use the 720p mode for those bourne type shots. They did have a couple of slowmo shots there anyway so they did use 720p atleast once.

However, Stu Maschwitz, who's opinion I highly regard, wrote in a blog post (which can be accessed here: http://prolost.com/blog/2009/10/19/nocturne-and-the-canon-1d-mark-iv.html) that the 1D MKIV has "by far the least rolling-shutter shear of any DSLR I’ve ever held".

And he's pretty experienced with DSLR cameras...so seeing that the 1D MKIV uses 2 x Digic IV processors, and the 7D uses 2 x Digic IV processors, you have to wonder if rolling-shutter can be somewhat improved with a firmware update/software fix?

Well, here's to hoping anyways! :)

Exactly. It's not like it's an impossible concept. If you add weight and proper stabilization, you minimize the effect of skew on moving imagery.

It's still THERE, but far less exaggerated. This is exactly why I walk around with a 14-16lb 7D rig, so that I can shoot up to 180mm handheld and not have to worry about the image wobbling or jittering like crazy.

Any chance of posting pics of your 7D rig Kholi? :)

Yeah, maybe. Though the problem is the read-out speed of the sensor not the processing afterwards (Digic V or IV) so I'm not keeping my hopes up.

If the 1D Mark IV has a significantly faster sensor allowing better Bourne type shaking then I will definitely upgrade my 7d.

By the way, the same "read-out speed is much faster than earlier models" speaks were going on when the Sony EX1 came to the market and the Sony V1. Well were they? The read-out speed of the EX1 seems to be exactly the same as the Sony HC1 which was the first consumer HDV CMOS-camera. So is there really any improvements? It seems people just want the newer model to be better and it's pretty hard to measure rolling shutter skew just by eye and memory.

You can spot wobble with the Red One too though it has a faster read-out speed than the EX1. Gamer which was shot on the Red One did have a surprising amount of it.

Rolling Shutter....LOL..I say so what??? No one but knuckleheads like us are distracted by it.

$5,000.00 for a DSLR body just because skew is a"little" better...??? persoanlly I hope to see more skew in Hollywood productions... Crazy huh?

In general, audiences don't notice. But when working with compositing and match-moving, it can become a significant issue. So let's just all remember that just because one of us doesn't have a problem, doesn't mean nobody will have a problem...

...good point...but at that price why not go for an EX-1 or something better for that purpose? Just a thought...

Is it actually better, though? For the shallow depth of field you'd still need to get a Letus/Brevis/whatever... Also, the awesome low light performance is pretty unique to the 7D/5D, the way I understand it. I'd maybe say different strengths than "better"

You are trying to compare results achieved with two different sized sensors.... so the comparison will always be "apples vs oranges." Even if the processors dealt with information at the exact same rate, in the same manner of compression, etc the effect would be different since there are more pixels on one horizontal line than on another.

Of course that doesn't mean that the performance couldn;t be improved....

Maybe I should have said ...any prosumer cam that uses CCDs instead of CMOS at that price. But I was also considering features like HDMI/SDI out for better color schemes also. It's not that these DSLRs can't do it...it's just at that price (1Dll vs 5Dll/7D) I'm thinking the only real benefit would be low light capability. As good as these DSLRs are in low light...it's not worth that huge a price jump ...2me (to someone else...yeah). So I suggested getting a real camcorder to do specific green screen work.

Rolling-shutter blows. Even if the 7D was $500, I'd still ***** about it having rolling-shutter. And the more bitching we do, the quicker they'll figure out a way to minimise it, or get rid of it completely, with their next generation of cameras.

If nobody bitched about the lack of video controls on the 5D, the 7D wouldn't have been designed the way it was. If 5D owners didn't ***** about the lack of 24P, Canon wouldn't be delivering it via a firmware update next month.

So here's to bitching! :)

Indeed!

I'm saying let's ***** to the right people, though. Make phone calls, write emails, whatever. If all the whining stays here, it's like preaching to the choir. :P

Amen.

Complain to people who can do something about it. There's a world of difference between productive lobbying, and pointless complaining, and the world's got enough ugliness in it that we don't need to add more. But if you target your complaints towards the people who can do something about it, then we all win.
