Any GH2 news on the HDMI output front?

HDMI was set to AUTO. Choices are

AUTO
1080i
720p
576p

AUTO don't help to get 1080p. 1080p may not exist in the in the HDMI/AVCHD implementation of the GH2. Or do you think AUTO gives more choices according to the EDID feedback?? Try, try ...
As I was eluding to in my earlier posts, I've never heard of an HDMI capable camera sending a pure 1080p signal over their HDMI port. Though HDMI 2 is capable of this the process of "removing" pulldown always had to be applied. I guess until you run through the steps mentioned by Sandbox above we won't know if the 1080i signal you are recieving is really just a progressive signal with pulldown added. So, in other words, it's no suprise to me (and to many folks who know what time it is) that the 1080/24p shows up as interlaced. It's then...and only then one could with out a doubt make that "crippled" claim or not. I just wish some folks would stop jumping-the-gun with the speculation that it's crippled. Wait until the evidence slaps you in the face (not referring to you aemonk).

Can someone please upload a file recorded at 24P over HDMI and allow people to experiment and/or remove pulldown?

Don't care that it's interlaced, I care more if it's a proper pulldown added that can be easily removed in post to get the correct progressive stream.

Apart any other considerations, it is funny how there is who believes a company like Panasonic doesn't think a product like GH2 in the context of its product(s) range. Oh, I'm sorry, I thought we were speaking about Sony instead ;-) LOL :-)

ok, I got 2 ProRes clips now. A 1080p24 from the AVCHD clip and a 1080i25 captured using the GH2's HDMI out to AJA Io HD. The GH2 was set to "24pCINEMA". Quality was "24H". HDMI was set to AUTO (1080i).

any idea where I can upload those clips (250mb)?

hmmm... there was someone here who posted an ftp dedicated address for big files.. i'll check.

there you go:

I can provide our FTP for later uploads if needed:

  • FTP Username: gh2@vaizdostudija.com
  • Password: gh2
  • FTP Server: ftp.vaizdostudija.com
  • FTP Server Port: 21
it is possible to upload there a huge files, and resume is possible also

hope this helps

i used cute ftp and it connects to this ftp in a jiffy..

be sure to name the files with a recognizable name :)

thank you roei z! It's uploading, but it will take 50 minutes. If you pm me an email address, I can add you to a shared folder. Might be 10x faster ...

... done

Just got back.

AEMonk wrote "Sorry for those s**tty vimeo clips, I haven't done this carefully enough."

Please. No apologies from ANYONE experimenting on this. You are helping more on this topic than anyone I can find on the entire 'net. So congratulations for picking up the torch and running with it.

Is the first AVCHD clip the original file or is it an HDMI capture from AVCHD playback from the camera. I'm interpreting that it's the original file.
The second file is a 1080i25 captured from HDMI. So may I ask why it was recorded at 25 fps if the camera was recording at 24fps?

Settings look good.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive, aemonk et. al.

No truer words spoken. Interlaced is not the problem. It's the apparent lack of pulldown that is. And that may be available, just have to keep exploring the option.

aemonk, just sent pm.

OK. Downloaded from roei z's ftp server (thank you, btw). First file is 24 fps, converted directly from AVCHD (right?). Second file is 25 fps. Can't remove pulldown from it since it is 25 and not 30 fps. Can you explain how the 25 fps happened? Was this the result of selecting AUTO on your [HDMI MODE]?
If you look carefully at the second file, you'll see how the interlacing actually creates ghost images during the wilder motions. And those ghosts repeat, frame after frame until the motion slows down. If that footage had pull down applied, you would see frames where the line would look solid (like in the 24 fps file) and suddenly there would be 2 frames with the 2 ghosts of the one line, and just as suddenly, the ghosts disappear and the line becomes solid again. That's what we're looking for. When the ghosts continue frame after frame, we know there was no pull-down, so why play with it further. Knowing what to look for can speed up your experiments - that's all :)
So my question now is, when you set HDMI MODE to 1) AUTO and when you set it 2) to 1080i, while recording in 24 fps to a SDHC card, what do you get in your capture folder from each setting?
Thanks in advance,

OK. Downloaded from roei z's ftp server (thank you, btw).

it's not my FTP, someone here in the forum was kind enough to let us use it.. Brody, why don't you put these FTP setting for everyone to use? it's getting forgotten here in those long threads..

Thanks for these samples - the sequence file just shows a white background here. Is that right? I mean - it's 900 meg or so and it's just blank. Do I need a codec to read it.

Another question for Aemonk , were you shooting an image on a TV screen? I can read only one of the other files. Thanks for the effort mate.

ok so, my GH2 is PAL thus 1080i25. I have two more things to test: I got a firmware update for the AJA io and I can switch the GH2's VIDEO OUT to NTSC ...

hmmm, no improvements :(

switching video out to NTSC has no effect. The AJA io identifies the HDMI signal always as 1080i25. Regardless of what is setup in the camera. In camera menu access and thus switching modes is not possible during recording.

selecting video formats other then 1080i25 results in a not recordable signal (green/distorted out of sync style)

via HDMI the only 1080 format the AJA io HD records from the PAL GH2 is 1080i25.

selecting recoding formats such as 720p50 works only when HDMI is disconnected. If HDMI is plugged in, the recording format option is grayed out. If you first select a 720p format and then plug in HDMI, the GH2 resets its self to AVCHD 1080i25.

Well, my Japanese GH2 ( NTSC ) was delayed but should arrive on Monday and I can do my own tests and share them here.

Thanks for the effort, very helpful. Can others try what I'm doing with the AJA_1080i file?

I am bringing it into After Effects CS5, interpreting the footage and changing it under the Fields and Pulldown menu and selecting "Separate Fields: Upper Field First"

That to me looks correct in creating a progressive stream and properly reinterlacing. Anyone else want to try this and confirm?

Thanks for the clips, if you want to keep experimenting can you shoot some stuff that is better lit and pointed an object? Maybe just grab a liquor bottle or something and throw it on a table, and try more AJA captures panning back and forth so we can remove interlacing and see if it's done correctly. This footage is tough to tell.
