Any examples of the D800 in a "real" production yet?

I don't have a Shuttle, but am thinking about buying one and been researching. What I have found out is that the QT wrapper, specially from uncompressed but also from DNxHD doesn't work very well on Windows based NLE. Does it work fine for you?

Does it work fine for you?

I have a Nikon D800 and I use a BM Shuttle 2 with software 3.01 to capture both QT uncompressed and DNxHD QT out HDMI. Plays perfectly with FCPX and Resolve Lite 9.0. on a MacBook Pro i7.:)

SJX,

The QT wrapper can cause color level remapping and gamma shifts. But this is a very peculiar and hard to pin down issue. It varies among NLE's and codecs. And many times there is no issue whatsoever. So to say "Windows based NLE" is way too broad.

The first thing you need to do is determine which NLE you'll be using and then see if that has problems w/ QT wrapped files of the codec of your choice.

Did you miss the part we were talking about editing it on Windows?
Besides FCPX sucks and is a toy. Sorry couldn't resist. :cheesy:

From a former FCP7 user.

What do you use, Premiere?

I use Avid Media Composer 6, but to be honest, I simply cannot recommend it, and it can suffer from color level and gamma shifts with QT. I've heard that Premiere does not suffer from this issue.

Updoad a clip D800 with my grand children.

I am potentially shooting a shortfilm/music vid (the lines between the two are a little blurred for this project) on the D800in the next few weeks, and if I do I will definitely post here soon!

I just completed a short film, well production anyway, not sure how long it will take in post.

Used my d800 with ninja 2, rented a set of zeiss CP.2 lenses with matte box, ff, etc for my AC. Also, used some filtration. Aside from a retarded shooting schedule and not having time to tweak I am pretty happy with the results.

The Sarlacc,

Really appreciate you sharing experiences with the D800. I've just started using the D800 to shoot wedding movies. I have only shot two with it so far (previously hired a 5Dmk2). Your short had very impressive colour grading. This is one thing that i'm lacking in knowledge. I tried the technicolor profile once with 5dmk2 and was not happy with the output. Found i got a lot of banding after applying lut in post and didn't really know what to do, coming from a photographic background. Could you kindly share your process with the D800. Are you using a flaat profile, nikon neutral, standard? Does the internal codec do okay? I've only shot with Standard profile so far, plan to try a few grading process options before I get busy.

Regards,

Alex

Alex,

Sadly, I am not a color grader and the director/editor is the one who tinkered with the grading in post. I shot that particular short with the standard color preset and he said the internal codec had WAY more flexibility in post that the 7d or 5d2.

Not really a real production, but we just shot some test shot with the our new CobraCrane 2HD, very roughtly (and badly) color corrected, shot with the D800.
you can see it with some "cinematic" shots.

Yeah heavy grade, but the overall look is great! How does the codec hold up in post? When watching it fullscreen on Vimeo it looks really soft, how does the image look before web compression and what lens did you use? Thanks!

Looks great. Love the soft lighting. Hopefully I will have a 'real production' to share soon. I had a pilot that was to be shot on it cancelled and then another shoot got upgraded to to 4k. I did shoot a doco on it but that is a long way off.
