C300: Any chance the C300 MKII can do 4k/60 with a future firmware upgrade?

I love my Canon's (1DC & C100 MKII), however I really want a 4K 10-bit camera preferably with 4k/60. My price range is the current body only C300 MKII at about $13k. In that range there is also the FS7 II (with lens) and a Red Raven body and base kit. If the C300 MKII had 4k/60 it would be a no brainer with all all my Canon glass and accessories and I have to say at times the dual-pixel autofocus comes in very handy.

Anybody in the know, know if Canon is planning a 4K/60 firmware upgrade or even if the camera's hardware/sensor is capable of it? Seems like such a miss on a otherwise great camera.

Thanks!

I always thought the C300 Mark II would have been the perfect camera with 4K/60p.

I don't see it happening - especially with the C700 around the corner - and it's one of the reasons I invested in the C500 (even with the tedious workflow), but who knows.

I feel like this has already been a topic some months ago, and, not just a similar topic, but with the same responses. Like, even Mitch Gross saying, "Not happening." But the time stamps on this topic are from the past few days. Deja vu.

Is there a term for 'group deja vu'? I must be experiencing it too, because I have read some threads recently that I swore I saw earlier this year, but the dates said they were recent.

"The central design goal was to offer a substantial extension of the 2K / HD options beyond the HD-only capability of the C300 while also adding a modest 4K / UHD capability..."

I'd say Canon considers 4K 30p is "modest", and we won't be getting a frame rate update until the MKIII (which I would buy in a heartbeat).

Still waiting for DLD's camera to come out...lol
There'd probably be several -

A back-side illuminated, 8.8 MPX full frame model with auto-focus, internal Raw to an SSD. Mainly for the low light/high ISO performance (kind of like A99II but with fewer pixels and in a URSA Mini type body)

An 8K full frame a la Red Weapon/Panavision DXL with auto focus capabilities (technically speaking, I am not sure what else one can do better than the Weapon in a two dimensional universe .... medium format Alexa65 doesn't seem to be offering anything more, except a higher price tag).

To me, the market looks ready for a big leap forward in the $10,000-$25,000 niche, which should be able to deliver pristine image with the modern workflow in its next generation of products. I think this is why these "moderately" priced Zeiss and Angenieux zooms are coming out. They're a bit high priced for URSA, C300 MKII and FS7 but look like a proper fit for Scarlet W, Varicam LT, the upcoming F5 replacement, etc.

I dunno kids, I answer so many of the same questions in slight variations over and over they kinda blur together. Only everyone in a while a curve ball comes my way.

Not on the forum often. Suppose I should have searched this topic before asking, thought perhaps someone had new information. Now back to work.

The thread is 1.5 years old...not happening. And the camera has also been replaced by the C200 world-wide for most consumers/prosumers.

It's only still available for the few professionals who still need a brand new one because of the few features it offers over the C200.

The C300 Mark III is due to be announced at the end of the year/early next year (rumors), and will definitely have it.

If the C300 MKIII is as big a leap up as the MKI -> MKII leap, and if it comes in at x2 the price of the C200, I expect it will exceed 4K60P.

Dont see this happening. I mean you cant even do 1080 60 without it cropping.....

It actually doesn't crop at 2K60... it crops between 61 and 120.

I bought the C300ii never expecting to see a 4K60 update and accept and adore the camera for what it is... but I really think it was a serious missed opportunity for Canon to cement the popularity and market share they had with the Mk I. If the lineup was the C200 as-is, 4K60 c300ii and the full frame C700 with a little more HFR power, they'd have a pretty formative line up... especially if the latter two were priced a little lower than they were at launch.

Canon had to learn a lesson before we would see any changes, and they did (lost tons of money to Sony)...so all of the cameras should be much better moving forward (like starting with the C200).

Still have to get those prices down though unless they are just looking to make pieces for museums.

I thought Canon’s plan with 4K60 for the C300 II was to buy the 4K60 add-on module, the 1DX II? ;)

On a serious note, when matching the two cameras, the 1DX II has nicer skin tones/gradients (custom picture style) out of camera. Part of the issue may be noise reduction on the C300 II- even when at -1 (“off”), it’s still very clean (when not using CLog2).

A lot of people jumped ship back then to the FS7 to get all the slomo that was being overused at the time. I had and sold an FS700 and found color was far more important than slomo. The dual Canon solution has worked well, and the 1DX II replaced the 5D3 for stills (excellent upgrade).
