FS7: another UHD XAVC very quick test

If it's as close to the F5 as I imagine, you'll be able to just shoot HD. 1080p from the F5 is razor sharp, I'm throwing a tonne of diffusion at mine, shooting wide-open to make things milkier and the damn thing still has fine detail for days. I can't imagine you'll be able to squeeze any additional detail into a 1080p frame by downconverting, I think the proverbial bucket is already full.

I sincerely hope you're right. Being able to get the FULL resolution of 1080P without having to start at 4K would be ideal. All a straight to DVD feature or documentary requires is good solid 1080P.

I've been shooting with the FS700 (just sold it on Ebay and about to ship it out). Have you ever compared the 1080P of the F5 with the 700?

Thanks Grug, That sounds like what I saw on the FS700>7Q 4K2HD downconvert from 4K Raw. Just what I'm hoping for from the FS7. Tons of detail but clean looking - naturally there even with detail in the camera off. I am curious what kind of diffusion you've found to be effective without calling attention to itself and what situations you use it for. Aso do you typically leave any Detail- On in the Camera set-up. ( I'm guessing no).

I rarely ever shoot digital without some kind of diffusion in front of the lens. Black ProMist is my go-to, but I also like SoftNet Black for certain close-ups.

And you guessed right, detail was switched off before I ever rolled a frame!

Sharpness is overrated ;)

The 700 is pretty mushy compared to the F3 and the F5, but I imagine most of that is due to the crummy internal codec. The O7Q material that I've seen online from the 700 looks very much on par with the F5 (but I haven't personally used that combination yet).

Thanks Grug. I think that's the final confirmation for me that what I want out of the FS7 is going to be there (assuming it looks iike an F5 which everyone says it does.) I always used to shoot with diffusion in the days of SD video to hide the awful look of detailing circuits but like many people got away from it in HD. However it sounds like this camera is so naturally sharp I 'll get back into it which should be fun.

When the large sensor craze first hit I used those 35mmm adapters a great deal and still love the look I got from it because the subtle diffusion from the imaging screen was kind of gossamer. Time to pull out the black promists and soft effects again. I haven't tried any of the newer choices like glimmer glass etc. Seems like a lot of new choices. Pulling out that old bag of nets , veils and stockings I used to use as well.

Ironic that we work like hell to have higher resolute images....and then work like hell to destroy them.

True enough, though to be fair, there's a big difference between pushing and stressing a high-quality image, and putting up with a low-quality image.
