Another great Old Spice ad.

If nothing else, I love that these are practical solutions, rather than CGI, that we're discussing!

Nothing to do with the Old Spice campaign, but this video by Gondry never ceases to blow me away...

No cuts, no CGI, no mo-co, no chroma-key (only front + rear projection) – just extraordinary imagination/logistics/choreography:

I know I’ve seen some making-of / BTS footage from this video, but unfortunately I can’t seem to find it on YouTube. It must be somewhere on the ‘Work of Director Michel Gondry’ DVDs, either as a separate feature, or as part of the longer doc that’s on there.

That is great video. I have not seen that in years. But it still does not explain how he went from barefoot with shorts to jeans and boots.

my guess is the jeans and boots are solid, and he is lowered into them.

That is what I'm thinking, But that bike is so damn small though. I just can't see where his lower half would fit. I really want to figure this out before they go online and tell us how they did it. i'm taking it way to seriously but dammit I want to figure it out.:Drogar-Shock(DBG):

the belt looks the same. but the loops have changed to blue. what if the shorts change color in the water and and the lower part of the leg is fake.

I think there is a lot more CG in this ad than you guys think.
I wouldnt think they care about the geeks thinking it was "real"
I think they are thinking of the masses who arent going to notice the difference.

Case in point, the very beginning of the ad.
Fake legs? that would put his real legs BEHIND that break away wall correct?
But his upper half is in FRONT of that wall right?
Watch when the wall breaks in half, Its a 100% vertical seam. IMPOSSIBLE
if his legs are behind and his head is in front.

(of course I'd love to be proven wrong because I think most of the charm of the first one IS because its real)

Well I found a video of the actor talking about it all.

"I'll tell you this much, I was wearing those jeans it was not a prosthetic mold.. I was wearing those jeans"

Nice find.

This has got to be one of the most effective ad campaigns ever. The company that came up with this whole concept is brilliant.

I would have to agree with that. Hell, I have the deodorant and the body wash. And I totally equate old spice with smelling my grand father who used to light our whole house up with the aroma of old man.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

So Richard, does the new ("Look at me") Old Spice smell the same as the the old ("Smell me. Smell me from the other side of the house") Old Spice?

And was the ad on your mind when you bought?

Not impossible.

The breakaway wall could actually be two pieces, each at different distances from camera - the lower section, up to the waterline, could be in front, and the upper section could be behind him. And they're both on the same platform as they pull out, so their speed would be identical.

That's my point EXACTLY... Any dude in his late-20's and older knows Old Spice as the horrible crap his dad used when he was a kid. To completely re-brand themselves like this speaks volumes for whoever came up with this ad campaign... which is why I'm giving props to the minds behind this.

Contrast this with Axe... "hey stupid kids! do you want to be mobbed by incredibly beautiful women?"... pff, yeah... the "axe effect"... cut to a reel of people puking :)

I like ads that deliver the message in a creative and entertaining way... while not insulting the consumer's intelligence. Yes, the Axe ads are supposed to be somewhat humorous... but it's no different then the beer/liquor ads where the implication is drinking their product is a sign of your sophistication or makes women attracted to you.

i.e. any beer or liquor commercial that shows the women taking notice of the bottle you're holding, then wryly smile with a lusty gaze (uh yeah, like that really happens) vs. say, the "keith stone" commercials by Keystone. I wouldn't be surprised if the Keith Stone ads came from the same minds as the Old Spice ads. (although no where NEAR the quality level... they're clearly a joke). The Old Spice ads make me want to buy their product... how could you better define a successful ad campaign?

LOL. There is no way in hell I would let old school Old Spice in the White bottle touch my skin. It is definitely the new "look at me" old spice.

and the ad was on my mind when I bought both. I had never picked up an Old Spice product until recently. When I saw it on the shelf the first thing I thought of was the Ad.

Yes I thought of that but when they pull them away (a few frames later)
you can see them from the side (a different angle)
and you can see its "one" piece.

Anyway, if you watch that rehearsal video you can see there is NO
wall at all as I suspected.
I truly doubt they are going to do all the details in that rehearsal down to
the power saw but leave out a very complex wall during at rehearsal.
