Another C300 sample: "Canon EOS C300 = Awesome"

From Jonothan Yi:

"In early Fall 2011, I shot some footage with a pre-production model of the Canon EOS C300 for one week in NYC. I created an article and a video for Canon based on my experiences with the camera. The video is meant to poke fun at most camera test videos I've seen over the years. Canon, not thrilled with my sense of humor, does not credit or condone this video, but I think it shows a lot of the camera's strengths."

I don't know why, but this video, more so than any others I've seen so far, makes me want to get my paws on that camera! Maybe it was those sweet color chart tests...

This is the first video I've seen that makes me really appreciate this camera. This was brilliantly done in my eyes. Simple explanations, simple dialogue.

And @3:05: YES! EVERY. FREAKING. TIME.

Never a camera test video has been so informative, educational and entertaining at the same time. I absolutely loved it - Jonathan Yi should test all cameras from now on!

By the way, I really like this camera. A lot.

Okay, that test is MUCH more along the way a camera test should be done. Hats off to Jonathan Yi for showing what the real differences are and why the C300 does bring a lot to the table.

Reheated or not, if that thing were to actually come out at $12k, I think I'd buy one.

Not reheated at all. At least the EOS mount should be near that price. The more I see this cam in action, the more I want it! I just bought a Canon XF105 for run and gun, low profile cam. I love it! Blow the xf105 up with an s35 brand new sensor... I can only imagine. CANON, Drop the price! Or we will Occupy your A**.

The only thing that seems a little off, are all the picture profiles, aren't they just redundant? If they intend to sell this camera for +10.000 then we can assume that professionals will be their primary users, and picture profiles are such a 'general consumer' type thing to use. This camera (in my opinion) is really only worth north of 10.000 for its amazing S-Log. Without it, I don't know what to think of it.

Anyway, just a thought. I did love the tests, and its so great to see this guy with a good sense of humor and still being able to show the right stuff we need to know about a camera. Thanks Cow for finding and posting this. But I've been in love with this camera ever since November 3rd, but maybe this will help clear some issues with other more reluctant people.

Before seeing this I was 65% sure I wanted to use a C300 for next year's project, now I am 80% that I would prefer this over RED. This thing had me laughing out loud, and family rushing to the computer to see what was so funny. "Oh, just another camera test." No, the gold standard of what makes the whole filming thing so much fun. Thank you. Still smiling.

I think the different CP's and their use or not depends on your turnaround, workflow and final delivery. For instance, sometimes there isn't time or budget for color correction, and the picture needs to be shot for direct delivery.

Typically, the different gammas within Canon's "Normal" and "Cine" curves give a quick basic look that's generally suitable for delivery without grading. As Alan Roberts notes in his report on the XF300/305 cameras, the profiles relate to the following gammas:

"Normal 1 = NHK 4.0, Normal 2 = ITU709 4.0 (the 709 curve with the slope near black), Normal 3 = ITU709, Normal 4 = BBC 4.0, Cine 1 = Film for Video, Cine 2 = for transfer to film"

According to him, the BBC curve produces the most accurate colors, but 709 is typical for HD production.

Loved it. Loving it. Want it.

The camera looks beast in the right modes, Canon Log is pretty sweet, and hey... you don't have to pay extra for it.

I agree with Barry, as well. That was pretty much a punch in the neck for those saying that there isn't any difference between the C300 and Canon DSLRs.
