andromeda

Would anyone be able to tell me the following:

for an upgrade purchase, when i am ready and financially able, would you guys go for an canon XL H1 or a dvx100b ( or HVX if available ) with reel streems andromeda that captures 4:4:4 uncompressed shtick. ?

thanks!

im not doing anything, i was more curious to know the quality comparison, do you get better image from andromeda or from a HD capture?

it completely depends. You almost could not find more different camera systems in the prosumer catagory if u tried.

As far as straight "quality", I'd say it's probably a safe guess that the Andromeda would be better. However, as far as I know the andromeda can't do more than 24fps, so if you were doing anything other than films or music videos (ie Sports, News, Reality TV) ur **** out of luck.

If you were considering the H1 I'd recommend doing a lot more research of both cameras before deciding anything.

Why would the andromeda produce a better image than the XLH1 if the H1 has SDI out? Is that still compressed, or does the DVX have better color, or what?

And there's another important point here. You'll be stuck to computer (mac only) whenever you want to shoot. Also I read somewhere that the workflow for editing is a bit of a pain in the ass. Though it would really be amazing if there was a way to do this directly into a firestore (of course, this is impossible). I would buy a dvx100 for 1800€ and have it "Andromedized" right away.

Just FYI rawfa, the correct term is "Andromedized" :)

As far as color reproduction goes, the Andromeda would have better colors and slightly better resolution than all of the currently available prosumer cameras. However, you could do wonders with an HVX200, XLH1, or even a JVC HD100-series camera off the bat.

The best quality choice is the Andromeda, but it's also the hardest to use in nearly every way.

The easiest choice is any of the other HD(v) prosumer cameras, but they are only slightly less quality in overall image. If that slight insignificant difference bothers you, then go for the Andromeda, but realize you lose the Panasonic warranty and any other features found in newer HD(v) prosumer cams (ie. variable frame rates, interchangeable lenses, ect.).

It won't. The XL-H1 would outperform an Andromeda DVX100 in terms of "straight quality"

Maybe in sharpness, but in terms of dynamic range and color space, the straight 444 from the dvx i believe yields 9+ stops of Dynamic range, thats Phenominal.

Possibly, incombination with an Anamorphic adapter, the now "anamophic" image may prove to be somethign amazing. However, its a HUGE pain in the butt though to be tethered to a Mac. The cables i dont mind... its the mac. (sorry had to poke fun :) So its true progeressive, 720P ish image. with 9+stops. Varicam territory.

the SDI's give a(n) (awesome) 4:2:2 1080i stream. but shanon enlighten me if im wrong, the uncomressed images are still, within the circuitry's own, 7stops. while its "uncompressed" ithnk that refers to uncompressed, as in before the data stream hits HDV processor. im not sure its the uncompressed raw data stream from the chips.

It sounds like the Andromeda will get more dynamic range, (which is pretty awesome) but how much resolution can it truly "see" and how much is really mere interpolation? The other factor easily forgotten is Canon HDV 24F can yield 720p 4:2:2 with a simple conversion to a codec like PhotoJPEG, or the SDI output will downconvert to a very sharp 720p with 4:4:4 color with the same conversion done via software.

I'm pretty sure the SDI output has the same dynamic range as what can be recorded to tape. Colorspace, however, is signifigantly more.

so its basically 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

The andromeda actually puts out a rather sharp picture. better looking 720P than the HVX IMO.

Allows for output up to 1540x990 from the DVX100 by utilizing the pixel shift between the CCD's.

Using pixel shift on the DVX 4:3 ccds? The andromeda is not doubt a great addition to a DVX. But the DVX in itself is a SD camera with 4:3 CCDs. Sure 4:4:4 is amazing. But I cant go past the limitations within the DVX itself. A great SD camera. Im no cam technical expert but the limitation must be somewhere? Now if you were to turn around and make andromeda for say the Xlh1 or the canon a1 and g1 so they output 4:4:4 then youve just about negated red. Make Andromeda for the Canon A1 and you have a sale right here!

Firestore should make a deal with the andromeda guys to come up with a REALLY portable solution. A hard-disk with andromeda software already incorporated. Some pul-and-play solution. I don't know if it's even possible...but I can asure you guys that if it was possible it would be a HIT! Good deal for andromeda, for firestore and for panasonic. They really should look into it.

How do you plan to get better color and resolution than a true HD 3CCD camera from three SD resolution CCDs?

You can fit a box to a Pixelvision camera that will give you '4:4:4 HD output', but it will still look like crap. Similarly, you can't get true HD 4:4:4 color from three SD CCDs with pixel shift, though you can certainly get something that looks significantly better than SD from them.

Well in theory you can get 4:4:4 as you can get 4:2:2 from the HVX200 SD ccds.

If you pixelshift 50% vertical and 50% horizontal you get 4 different colorpixel for 3ccd pixels.

PIXELSHIFT.GIF

If you look here you cant find a single one pixel with the same colorvalue as another. One is 1R 1B 1G the next is 1R 1B 2G next is R2 B2 G2 next is R2 B2 G3 etc etc.

Of course this isnt CMOS so it will not work exactly this way but just show that it aint just better looking SD.
