And The Winners Are.......

Thanks Barry S for putting so much time and effort into this thing. I for one thought the voting system was excellent. Of course, no voting system is perfect but you did a really good job.

this sampling, although voluntary, is pretty decent, as long as the voters vote for all of the films and stay accurate to their own method.

I thought the voting system was quite nice! I would even opt for MORE categories. Lumping editing and cinematography into one was a killer for me.

Some films scored high on one and very low on the other, and I ended up splitting the difference. Plus, I think it'd be beneficial to the filmmakers if they could see those sorts of things.

Don't get me wrong, Barry, everything you guys have done has been appreciated, BIG TIME. Just interesting how people rate things is all.

I'm with dj, if there's options for more categories to include editing, story (this is where people can say "Cool, that's original"), directing, etc.

Barry, please don't take my comments as any criticism of the scoring system. not how it's intended at all. This is certainly the best way I can think of, and I thank you for taking the time to do it. I'm just a dork who's interested in how people interact with numbers. ;)

Ok, here's an update on the winners in all categories. The following eight films have all won prizes for their respective awards. The Recognition of Excellence awards recognize technical achievement in high scoring films that did not place in the top three spots.

1st Place - CPU by Spidey
2nd Place - The ODD Squad by jdanstan
3rd Place - A Brief Case by TheMacB

Recognition of Excellence in Lighting - Synthetic Love by hiro
Recognition of Excellence in Cinematography - We Are Not Alone by Kaz
Recognition of Excellence in Sound Design - Wages of Sin by conrad johnson
Recognition of Excellence in Screenplay - Dead Inside by prezorg
Recognition of Excellence in Editing - The Sequence by pastywhiteboy

The following are the highest scoring films in each of the individual categories. There are no prizes associated with these categories, but the scores contributed to the overall rating of each film.

Best SFX - We Are Not Alone by Kaz
Best Cinematography - CPU by Spidey
Best Lighting - CPU by Spidey
Best Sound Design - CPU by Spidey
Best Score - The ODD Squad by jdanstan
Best Screenplay - A Brief Case by TheMacB
Best Acting - CPU by Spidey

So does that mean I get more prizes or just first? making sure. :) hehe excited.

congrats to all

It was all Stock Music? Well...then how does it qualify as a score? It's a soundtrack then, made up of all source music...anyone have any thoughts on this?

... there aren't really any movies with a CPU-level storyline, but A New Tomorrow (that's us, go watch, review ;D) level cinematography ;)

did you REALLY just say that there aren't ANY other movies with a CPU level storyline and cinematography (the first place film) ... except yourself?

wow, you got a pair on ya, huh? :cheesy:

HAHA! I have to agree. A lot of storylines were very good. Didn't care for A NEW TOMORROW all that much though.

HA!

No, no that's not what I said at all.

What I'm saying is that almost exclusively if a movie got like a 7 or an 8 in screenwriting, they also got a 7 or an 8 in cinematography, or vice versa. So I'm saying there seem to be (at least according to the voting) no movies with CPU level storyline (8) but An New Tomorrow level cinematography (5). Which I find odd. I'm *certainly* not trying to compare the two films.

whew ... language is a virus ...

I thought you were saying that no one had both good cinematography AND a good story except you two

glad you clarified :)

I liked a new tomorow: thought th scructure was perfect for a short, the dialogue good, and the theme pretty well explored ... reminded me of Kevin Smith some.

I see, ok, I was a bit confused. Thought you meant only your film and CPU had good cinematography and a good story. I thought A NEW TOMORROW had a great concept!

Are the links still up to view any of the movies - I was away out of town last few weeks w/ no highspeed access -

Interested in seeing the top films.

you are 100% right in your assertion as to what constitutes a "soundtrack" vs. a "Score".

As such, I have no problem handing down the award to Adam Beamer for A Brief Case, as he would have the highest score in this category -- score meaning a unified compisition written by a single composer or compisition team, not a mix of music from various sources (original or not), mixed and re-edited to suit the film, like the ODD Squad or CPU, for example (unless Chris Hurn - the other chris - and Spidey and Matt sat down in the studio together and wrote music -- in which case we would have a tie for best score:) )

As less than 10% of the films would qualify for an "original score" award since only 5 or so (if that many) have actual "scores" per se, as opposed to re-edited / mixed music ... for the next fest we might want to have this catagory be a seperate category like SFX, one that the voter can leave blank or not if it doesn't apply to the film in question.

So Barry -- can we make it official -- best score to A Brief Case?

Our film had a completely original score from one composer. :)

lol, that's cool dude ... but A Bried Case and CPU scored 7.1's in that category:)

I know. :) Not saying I won, just saying I am happy we had that :) And, for the record I think your score Jack was freakin' cool!

Note to self: Never use own movie as example in future. I swear I only did it 'cause I didn't want to accuse anyone *else's* movie of having unimpressive cinematography!

I blame parenthetical references. (they always get me)
